INTRODUCTION
 Electricity is a convenient form of energy for
technological processes and households;
 However, access to electricity is not affordable for
many Tanzanians; and
 The Research Project looked into the possibilities of
reducing the cost of house wiring.

BENEFITS OF
ELECTRIFICATION
 Socio-economic benefits
o Improvement of living standards;

o Stimulation of rural business enterprises;

o etc.

 Environmental benefits
o Reducing deforestation by minimizing the use of charcoal, wood,

o Conservation of the environment (cleanness, no smoke, ash, etc).

COMPARISON OF WIRING
METHODS
 For normal (conventional) wiring
o Technical aspects (standards, safety regulations, procedures and
approval); and
o Cost elements (materials, wireman, electrical contractors and
connection).
 For low cost residential wiring
o Technical aspects (standards, safety regulations, procedures – to be developed and approval
(pending with TBS); and
o Cost elements (materials, wireman, electrical contractors and connection (TANESCO,
EWURA).

DEVELOPMENT OF THE
“READY BOARD CONCEPT”

 The Ready Board can substitute the

Engineers are involved from conception, design, construction and operation of
processes and in the creation and improvement of products.

Projects Engineer- organize and run projects e.g. cement,

petrochemicals, pulp, .

Design Engineer- determining how the process is to work & sizing

pieces of equipment.

Operations Engineer- ensuring that the plant is producing the right amount
and specs of product.

Research and Development Engineer (R&D) – innovative and creative.

Develop future plants and products, improving
efficiency, environmental performance.

Sales and Marketing- Product and process consultants.

CHALLENGES OF FOSTERING
APPLIED RESEARCH IN THE
MANUFACTURING SECTOR
 Supporting Infrastructure
 Power
 Communications
 Transportation (road, railway ports)
 Water
 Poor Business Linkage
 No Industrial Accumulation High
 High Tax Rate Manufacturing
 Manpower (skilled & costs)

NEW ERA OF FREE MARKET ECONOMY
FOR TANZANIAN INDUSTRIES
New generation industries:
 Flourishing
 Innovative: process and product diversification
 Market driven
 Management with vision -no politics
 Skilled and motivated workforce
 Stiff global competition
 Wide opportunities of ICT for tech. transfer
 No in-house R&D.

Outcome:
Our R&D and Universities are stuck with their tech. innovations while, SMEs are
searching for technologies.
Demoralized engineering profession.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEVELOPING
APPLIED RESEARCH IN TANZANIA

Opportunities now are available:

 for profit potential in engaging R&D activities;

 the use of knowledge as a purchasable and
saleable good i.e Intellectual Property;
 use of distance education, virtual education; and
 new areas of research in renewable energy
technologies, ICT and in Technology Transfer for
stimulating rural development.

CONCLUSION

Contribution of Applied Research and offering

Community Services to the development of this Nation is
highly needed now not later

 We do recommend also that we get support in

building capacity in Research in the area of ICT
applications related to Electrical Power Engineering
especially on the Renewable Energy Technologies
for Rural Electrification.
