VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE
Is one of the three areas or aspects of guidance,
can be defined as the process of assisting an
individual to choose an occupation, prepare for
it, enter it, and progress in it.
Each individuals choice should be based upon
his personal traits, talents, aptitudes and
capacity.
PURPOSE OF VOCATIONAL
GUIDANCE
1. To help adapt the schools to the needs of the
students and the community
2. To assist the students in choosing, preparing and
training for, entering, and making progress in their
chosen career.
3. To disseminate knowledge of competitive and
other problems of the business and occupational
world as well as their characteristics.
PURPOSE OF VOCATIONAL
GUIDANCE
4. To help workers understand their relationship with
other workers, and with society as a whole.
5. To secure greater cooperation between the school
and the various commercial, industrial and
professional pursuits.
6. To encourage the establishment of courses of
study in educational institutionsthat will
harmoniously combine both cultural and practical
studies.
HISTORY OF VOCATIONAL
GUIDANCE
1908 - The first report on vocational guidance was
made by Frank Parsons, known as the Father of
Guidance Movement.
1913 the first mention about vocational guidance
in the Philippines made by the Director of Education
1925 Dr. Paul Monroe, head of an educational
survey group recommended for elementary
education that surveys of the occupations be made
in every community and province.
HISTORY OF VOCATIONAL
GUIDANCE
1925 Batangas High School first introduced
guidance in the fourth year and then in the seventh
grade.
1929 copies of a booklet entitled Opportunities
for Seventh Grade Graduates designed as an aid
in vocational guidance.
1931 224 graduates of vocational schools were
given placement through the Placement Department
of the Division of Vocational Education.

GUIDANCE
1931 General Type A curriculum was tried out
in the Batangas and Capiz high schools. The
new curriculum provided for exploratory courses
during the second year, and specialized
vocational courses the following years, like
Automotive Work, Woodworking, Electricity,
Graphic Arts, Music, Home and Family Nutrition,
and Child Care
ATTEMPTS AT SYSTEMATIZED
VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE
Definite and more comprehensive plans for
vocational guidance materialized. Two such
programs are the guidance program in the
Division of City Schools in Manila and the
guidance program of the Rodriguez Vocational
High School. Exploratory courses are offered to
boys and home economics to girls
ATTEMPTS AT SYSTEMATIZED
VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE
The 2-2 Plan for Secondary schools, which
started during the school year 1957 1958 was
fully enforced in 1959 -1960. It aims to provide
occupational competence, and give the students
more adequate academic preparation in terms of
community needs and based on their individual
abilities and interests. It also recognizes the
increasing need for guidance counselor.
PROBLEMS WHICH EDUCATION
AUTHORITIES HAVE TO FACE AND SOLVE
1. Inadequate preparation of newly appointed
guidance counselors.
2. Assigning part-time counselors, those who have to
teach one or more classes.
3. Lack of understanding of what constitutes
vocational guidance on the part of administrator.
4. Conflict between what counselors believe as to the
course as student should take on the basis of his
potentialities, interests and aptitudes and what the
parents would want him to pursue.
