The Second Innings
From Soldiers to Entrepreneurs

It was just another day at work for Major MR Pattabiraman. Post retirement from the Indian army, he took up a
civilian assignment with TAFE (factory for Massey Ferguson tractors), at Doddaballapur. Like him, the factory
employed around 30 ex-servicemen, working in different shifts.

At 9.30 pm, a fire broke out at the booth where tractors where being painted. In a flash, the flames were hitting the
sky. It would have meant apocalypse for the factory but for the agile, quick-thinking ex-army men.
Trained to fight fire and worse, without a second thought they stepped into the blaze, and beat it.

That incident, to him, stands testimony to how the civil society can benefit enormously by
employing ex-servicemen, who are trained to the hilt in various skills.

Why should one employ an ex-serviceman? Besides their training, army personnel are groomed to
possess qualities of commitment, decisiveness, discipline, efficiency, focus,
integrity, loyalty, leadership, and reliability, he said. It is obviously a win-win situation
for the army personnel and the civilians.

Strengths of Ex-Servicemen

1. Quest for Learning: To survive in such a challenging environment, everyone (team member) has to keep
him/herself aware of the latest developments, keep his/her skills updated, learn new competencies and constantly
thrive to improve the quality. Army career has given them training, training and training.

2. Working with diverse people from different backgrounds: Today there are no boundaries, people from one
part of the world work with other people elsewhere in the world, and we have to be more tolerant and understanding
for diversified workforce. Service Officers understand different cultures of people working in the organization better.

3. Compete against Time, Delivery and Quality: With so much of Global competition, the winner is one who can
deliver quality goods in lesser price and before time to astonish the customers. Here again Service officers win due to
their agility and swift action.

4. Work Ethics and Moral Values: with cut-throat competition companies tend to resort to malpractices, The
gentlemen spirit is an integral part of service officers training.

5. Try to make Win- Win for all stakeholders: They (Service Officers)know how to make the opponent
comfortable with their comradeship and team spirit.

A person with a Captain (Army) before his name has a minimum of 5
years in the managerial position ( As a leader not just follower), some
basic professional degrees or training and has earned a college degree.
When taking the exam, during the training and his entire service, no
rsums and references accompanies a defence personnel. They are
either able to accomplish the task or fail.

The corporate world has shown tremendous interest in recruiting more and more ex-
servicemen. This is because they (the ex-servicemen) are disciplined, skilled,
energetic and are very good organizers, the minister said.

The Indian corporate sector is witnessing a new trend in appointing former defence
officers in middle and top level management positions. With the rigorous training with
the forces, these officers bring with them a rich management experience, a focused
approach and a natural discipline.
