History of fireworks in India

INTRODUCTION
History of fireworks
The history of fireworks dates back to 2000 years ago in China
during Han dynasty even long before the gun powder was
invented.

The Chinese stumbled upon natural firecracker around 200 BC,
when they accidently burnt the green bamboo, which exploded
with a loud bang, when heated due to the presence of hollow air
pockets.

This strange sound, unheard before, frightened people and the
animals terribly.
The Chinese believed that since it scared the humans and
the animals to great extent, they thought probably it
would scare the evil spirit Nian, who they believed to eat
crops and humans.

Thus, it became their customary for special occasions such
as weddings, coronations, birth and New year, to burn
green bamboo to scare away the evil spirit.
THE FIRE DRUG
The fire drug
Later, during the Sui and Tang dynasties (~600-700 A.D),
Chinese alchemist while experimenting to discover the
Elixir of the life, accidently they mixed
saltpeter(Potassium Nitrate), Honey, Arsenic Disulphide
which when cooked over the fire resulted in a large,
bright, hot flames.

It was named, Huo Yao or the Fire drug.
Soon, the Chinese discovered that if the bamboos are
filled with the fire drug and thrown into the flames, the
gases produced by the burning powder blasted the tube
apart with a louder much more powerful bang than the
green bamboos.

It gave birth to the concept of real-time fireworks.

The Chinese developed fireworks making as an art and
exported to various countries

Fireworks History of India
In India, however the adoption of fireworks was restricted to few
items made of gun powder and iron borings until 20
th
century.

In early 20
th
century, Mr. Das Gupta set up a Match factory in
Calcutta. At that time, two young entrepreneurs, Mr. A Shanmuga
Nadar and Mr. Iya Nadar (Cousin brothers, both now deceased),
went to Calcutta on business, and stumbled upon Das Guptas
Match making factory next to the lodge, where they stayed.

Impressed and Inspired they set up their first match making factory
at Sivakasi.
FIREWORKS HISTORY OF INDIA
After their success in the business of making Safety matches,
colour matches and Star matches they moved on to making of
sparklers which was until then imported from Germany and UK.

The books on chemistry available at that time boosted the their
knowledge and helped to increase the quality of fireworks
produce.

The greater milestone for the modern family fireworks was laid
with advent of the Central Excise Duty on Matches was
promulgated in 1934.

After the end of the second world war Standard Fireworks,
Kaliswari Fireworks and National fireworks become prominent
producers of the Indian firework Industry.

The growth of the firework industry was phenomenal with
demands accelerated by increased living standard and earning
power.

The raw materials required for the fire working making were
produced in surplus indigenously.
Low rainfall and a dry climate prevailing in Sivakasi in and around
contributed to uninterrupted production of Fireworks.

What started as 1 to 2 factories in 1923, by end of 1986 reached
260 number of factories in Tamil nadu alone.

The recent past 15 years, witnessed organized factories being
established at Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh,
West Bengal, UP and Kerala.

CONCLUSION
India broke the world monopoly of china over the firework
export during the period of 1977-1978.

India exported nearly 40 lakhs rupees worth of fireworks and
Firecrackers which were considered and accepted as superior
products over the Chinese products.

Thus, The two young men A Shanmuga Nadar and Mr. Iya Nadar
made a history by producing fireworks of highest quality and
made Sivakasi as the Firework production hub of India.
