Eating Disorder (NOS)

Symptoms
Some common signs of EDNOS include the following:

obsessive calorie counting and knowledge of calories in almost all foods;

skipping meals, often eating only small snacks;

pushing food around on a plate rather than eating it;

exercising excessively, particularly after or to make up for eating;

ingesting an excessive amount of food, even when not hungry;

grazing for as long as food is available;

hiding eating habits due to shame or embarrassment; and
showing excessive interest in weight, body image, and fasting.

Eating Disorder (NOS)
For females, all of the criteria for Anorexia Nervosa are met except that the
individual has regular menstrual cycle.

All of the criteria for Anorexia nervosa are met except that, despite significant
weight loss, the individuals current weight is in the normal range.

All of the criteria for Anorexia nervosa are met except that the binge eating and
inappropriate compensatory mechanisms occur at a frequency of less than twice a week
or for a duration of less than 3 months.

The regular use of inappropriate compensatory behavior by an individual of normal body
weight after eating small amounts of food (e.g., self-induced vomiting after the
consumption of two cookies).

Repeatedly chewing and spitting out, but not swallowing, large amounts of food.

Binge-eating Disorder: recurrent episodes of binge eating in the absence of the regular
use of inappropriate compensatory behaviors characteristics of Bulimia Nervosa.

Case
An 18 year-old female who had been suffering from an
eating disorder from the age of 12 was admitted to the
Clinic in Stockholm. She was of normal weight (BMI =
20.9 kg/m2), induced vomiting after each meal and
restricted her eating between meals. She was very
shy, spoke very softly, and had problems facing the
doctor. She was taking Avanza and ingested 50
laxatives a day. Her parents complained that she most
of the time just chewed and spit out the food instead
of swallowing. She had normal values for haemoglobin,
red and white blood cell counts, platelets, albumin,
creatinine, urea, liver transaminases, ferritin, plasma
iron, thyroid gland hormones, electrolyte balance and
acid/base balance. An electrocardiogram showed normal
cardiac rhythm. She had irregular menses as well.
