Preface
Pollution happens everywhere
Especially in major city
It is dangerous and it affected our life in many
ways
We need to identify the pollution around us to
prevent harm
2 kinds major pollution affecting major city : air
and water pollution
The aim for this presentation is to raise societys
awareness towards the issue

Pollution
What is pollution?
Pollution is the introduction of a contaminant
into the environment. It is created mostly by
human actions, but can also be a result of
natural disasters. Pollution has a detrimental
effect on any living organism in an
environment, making it virtually impossible to
sustain life.

Kinds Of Pollution
1. Air Pollution
2. Land Pollution
3. Water Pollution
4. Sound Pollution
But in our presentation we only discuss Air
Pollution and Water Pollution to save the
time for other group.
Air Pollution

What is Air Pollution?

Air pollution is the
accumulation of hazardous
substances into the
atmosphere that danger
human life and other living
matter.

What are the sources of air
pollution?

Some of the main contributors to air
pollution are:
1. Automobile emissions
2. Tobacco smoke
3. Combustion of coal
4. Power plants
5. Manufacturing buildings
6. Paint fumes
7. Aerosol sprays
8. Wildfires
9. Nuclear weapons
Facts and Impact About Air Pollution
Facts About Air Pollution
Here are a few facts about air pollution:
Almost 232 million different types of
vehicles are driven by U.S. citizens every
day, adding greenhouse gases into the
air
U.S. vehicle emissions contribute 45%
to global warming
The average adult consumes 3,000
gallons of polluted air every day
Vehicle exhaust contributes to 60% of
carbon monoxide emissions in the U.S.
and up to 95% in large cities
Every year 335,000 Americans die of
lung cancer, which is a direct result of
air pollution

Impact Of Air Pollution
Air pollution can affect our health
in many ways with both short-
term and long-term effects.
Examples of short-term
effects include irritation to the
eyes, nose and throat, and upper
respiratory infections such as
bronchitis and pneumonia.
Examples of long-term health
effects can include chronic
respiratory disease, lung cancer,
heart disease, and even damage
to the brain, nerves, liver, or
kidneys.
Example Of Air Pollution

How to Prevent Air Pollution

The number one way to prevent air pollution is to walk or bike
more and drive less. This will prevent fossil fuels from polluting the
air. Here are some other ways to prevent air pollution:
1. Dont smoke
2. Keep your car maintenance up-to-date
3. If you have to drive, do your errands at one time
4. Dont buy products that come in aerosol spray cans
5. Avoid using lighter fluid when barbecuing outside
6. When you drive accelerate slowly and use cruise control
7. Always replace your cars air filter
8. Dont use harsh chemical cleaners that can emit fumes
9. Inspect your gas appliances and heaters regularly

Water Pollution

What is WaterPollution?

Water pollution is the
contamination of water bodies
( lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and
groundwater). Water pollution
occurs when pollutants are
discharged directly or indirectly
into water bodies without
adequate treatment to remove
harmful compounds.
Water pollution affects plants and
organisms living in these bodies of
water. In almost all cases the effect
is damaging not only to
individual species and populations,
but also to the natural biological
communities.

What are the sources of air
pollution?

Some of the main contributors to water
pollution are:

1. Factories
2. Refineries
3. Waste treatment facilities
4. Mining
5. Pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers
6. Human sewage
7. Oil spills
8. Failing septic systems
9. Soap from washing your car
10. Oil and antifreeze leaking from cars
11. Household chemicals
12. Animal waste

Facts and Impact of Water Pollution
Facts About Water Pollution
Over two-thirds of U.S. estuaries and
bays are severely degraded because of
nitrogen and phosphorous pollution
Every year almost 25% of U.S. beaches
are closed at least once because of
water pollution
Over 73 different kinds of pesticides
have been found in the groundwater
that we eventually use to drink
1.2 trillion gallons of sewage, storm and
industrial waste are discharged into U.S.
waters every year
40% of U.S. rivers are too polluted for
aquatic life to survive

Impact Of Water Pollution
1. Vomiting or diarrhea
2. A sick stomach
3. Skin rashes
4. Cancer (Some kinds of cancer, like
leukemia, can happen after drinking
bad water for a long period of time)
5. Reproductive problems (Some kinds of
reproductive problems, like infertility,
can happen after drinking polluted
water for a long period of time)
6. Developmental problems (Some kinds
of learning disabilities can happen
after drinking dirty water for a long
period of time)

How to Prevent Water Pollution
Try using environmentally friendly household products like toiletries, soap-
based household cleaning material, and washing powder as far as
possible.
Do not use colored bathing bars. They are known to contribute more to
water pollution.
Automobile oil should be re-used as far as possible. Also, it is important to
keep your automobile well maintained in order to prevent leakages of
toxic fluids like antifreeze and oil.
Try using natural fertilizers and pesticides as far as possible, or if not, do
not overuse them or over-water gardens and lawns. This will help in
reducing the pollutants that get into water systems due to runoffs.
