At the end of the 14th century, 600

years ago, Europeans started to


take people from Africa against
their will to be slaves in the
New World. About 15
million Africans were
transported to the
Americas between
1540 and 1850.
Slavery
The slaves were taken to America
by ships, chained together by their
hands and feet. A large number
of slaves died on the journey
from disease.

The famous black leader
Martin Luther King
was born in 1929. Luther King
became a religious leader after he
finished his studies and he fought
against racism and discrimination in
the United States of America.
From 1955 to 1968 King devoted
his life fighting discrimination
against Blacks in the USA.
King preached against
discrimination all over the
country, organized
demonstrations and appealed
to the courts demanding that
the laws against blacks be
abolished.

In 1968 King was
assassinated.
Blacks can only sit at
the back of the bus.
Blacks cannot live in a
white neighborhood.

Blacks may not study in white
schools.
Blacks may not eat in the same
restaurants.

to people. I think he represents
everyone's struggle in life.
What he means to me is my own
struggle in life.
He makes me think that no
matter if I am an Asian or not,
I can conquer anything and anybody.
No matter what color
I am, I'm still a person with
feelings and personality.
Even now racism still exists. That is
why he is known as the leader of
black rights.
His speech, "I have a dream. . ."
is so famous
because everyone
has a dream no
matter what color he is.
