The Intrepid Museum,
located at Pier 86, is a refurbished air craft carrier built during World War II that now houses exhibits on flight, space, and air travel. History The Intrepid was commissioned in 1943 and sent to fight in the Pacific. After the war, the Intrepid helped with the Space Race as the primary recovery vessel for Mercury and Gemini missions. The ship served three tours of duty in Vietnam. Before decommissioning, the Intrepid served as an anti-submarine ship for NATO in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Baltic Seas. Exhibits The main exhibit space houses planes and artifacts surrounding the Intrepid’s history. Hands on activities give visitors an opportunity to learn what it would have been like to be a sailor, pilot, or astronaut.
