A hydraulic pump converts mechanical power into hydraulic energy and produces liquid movement but not pressure. The document describes experiments conducted using a pressure compensated vane pump to measure flow rate at different pressures, investigate filling time, and demonstrate hydraulic power transmission. The results show that filling time decreases as pressure increases, indicating higher flow rates and pump power at higher pressures. However, the performance graph did not follow expected patterns due to errors in the apparatus and measurements.

A hydraulic pump is a mechanical device that converts
mechanical power to hydraulic energy.
It performs two functions; -Its mechanical action creates vacuum at pump inlet -The mechanical action creates vacuum at pump inlet The pump does not generate pressure and only produce liquid movement. To operate pressure compensated vane pump To investigate time required to fill with different pressure. To learn about the concept of hydraulic power transmission To show the relationship between flow rate Q, pressure P, of pressure compensated vane pump The oil flow rate in measuring glass can be calculated by using; Q= v/t
Where; Q= Vd x N
The hydraulic power transmission between pump and motor can be calculated by; P = p x Q Hydraulic power transmission = Pp x Pp = Pm x Pm where; Qp = Qm = system flow rate
1) Assemble the circuit correctly and make sure that the connecting nose fit properly
2) Use the flow control valve, v1 as a load simulator. It will simulate the loading condition
3) For part A of the experiment, close shuttle v2, v5 and open shuttle valve v4 and v6. The flow control v1 is set to fully open.
4) Switch on the pump
5) Set the system pressure for 15 bars by turning the knob of the flow control valve v1 to close
6) Close the shut off valve v6 below the measuring glass. Record the time required to fill in about one liter of oil in the measuring glass. 7) Switch of the pump. Open shuttle v6 to drain out the oil from the measuring glass
8) Repeat steps 4 to 6 for higher pressure. Record any pressure increase in the system by using pressure gage P1.
9) The pressure gage P1 will show a maximum pressure of the hydraulic system. Record the maximum pressure
10) Switch off the pump and prepare the report.
1) Assemble the circuit correctly and make sure that the connecting hose fit properly
2) Use flow control valve, V1 as the speed controller for hydraulic motor. It must be set fully open for hydraulic motor maximum rotational speed.
3) Close shuttle v4, v6 and open shuttle valve v2 and v5.
4) Switch on the pump. The hydraulic motor should start to rotate.
5) Set the pressure gage p1 for 15 bar by turning the knob of the pressure relief valve v1.
FLOW RATE AGAINST PRESSURE GRAPH OF PUMP PERFORMANCE As the pressure increases, the time taken to fill the cylinder is shorter and the flow rate is increasing. As the pressure increases, the power of the pump is increasing. There are some different in the graph lines pattern and do not follows the expected pattern before. This is due to the apparatus error. For instance, during pump performance curve experiment, it took the longest time to fill the oil in the cylinder for pressure 50 bars. Supposedly, as the pressure increases, the time taken should be shorter. Besides, the pump stop working as the pressure is set to 50 bars. Hence, the measurement could not be conducted and stopped at 45 bars. Other errors are human error and parallax error while conducting the experiment. The objective of the experiment is achieved which are -to operate pressure compensated valve. -to investigate time required to fill the tank with different pressure. -to learn about the concept of hydraulic power transmission. -to show the relationship between flow rate and pressure of compensated vane pump. The graph of pump performance curve is slightly different due to some errors which are parallax error, human error and equipment error.
