Business Forum 6 Nov 2014

Current Strengths and Opportunities

Full employment
Still one dominant high value export earning sector
Very low crime levels
Mature infrastructure and heritage
Excellent on-island professional skills availability
Strong public sector finance base to-date
Geographically very well located
21st Century energy connectivity
#GCFE2gether
future@gcfe.net

Business Forum 6 Nov 2014

Weaknesses and Threats

Single economic sector dependence for now 30 years
Employment base contraction (primarily finance and retail) with no real
indication of new employers in pipeline
De-population now occurring (falling house prices/sales, etc.)
High unit cost base (once low)
One of the oldest age profiles of any island in world
Lack of suitable land availability for economic/social development
Too great a reliance on direct taxation
Weak physical (air links) and IT connectivity
Climate change vulnerability

Issues to consider?
One twenty-five year vision (economic, social and environmental)?
Channel Islands strategy , sharing public sector services (e.g. health)?
Land reclamation and climate change?
Countering loss of direct income as working population decreases?
Reducing high cost base to do business?
Export earning sectors creating large number of new jobs?
Future skills and training provision (older age groups)?
Above all - public engagement and sign up?
