The magazine that I will base mine on:

I will base my magazine of NME.
I have chosen to base my magazine on NME, I have chosen this because it is a music magazine that is of the genre that I
have chosen for my magazine. Also it is a well known magazine that clearly understands what an indie magazine must
consist of therefore it will give me good guidelines for a structure of the magazine that I will make.
NME History:
NME which stands for New Musical Express was created by
Theodore Ingham which is a British weekly journalism publication.
It is largely associated with Rock, Alternative rock and Indie music.
It originally started of as a newspaper then moved on to becoming
a magazine during he 1980s and 90s . It was the first British paper
to include a ingles chart and became the best selling British
newspaper. This then lead on to becoming the worlds biggest stand
alone music site as it launched its own website in 1996. This shows
just how popular NME has become over the years as the website
now has over 7 million users, proving it to be very successful. This
implies that this would be great magazine to based mine on as this
magazine has been proven to be quite successful.

Origins of Indie music:

The history of Indie music:
Indie music is a mix of pop, jazz, rock, blues, and poetry.
Indie music is short for Independent music.
Indie music was created in the 1950s -60s but it was very discrete and not many people had heard of it. It was mainly
played in garages and small venues.
It was not famous until the 80s, not many indie artists had got signed at first due to them wanting t create their own
type of music rather than any well known genres of music or something that the people would like. To this day Indie
music is not as popular as the others. But a lot of well-known Indie bands started as small garage bands. They played at
venues often and started off with small CDs.
The term indie is sometimes also used to describe a genre such as indie rock, indie metal or indie pop.
The Indie music began to grow during the punk rock era, the UK indie chart was first around in 198, it then became
more known from the late 70s and in the 80s as certain UK indie labels such as, Rough trade, Cherry Red, Factory Glass
and Creation records were released.
Artists/bands that are classed as Indie artists:

The Kooks
Jake Bugg
Ocean Colour Scene
Oasis
The Arctic Monkeys
Two door cinema Club
The Killers
The wombats
The fratellis
The 1975
The smiths

Examples of Indie magazines; NME:

The NME magazine obviously sticks to the colour scheme of being

black, red, yellow and white. This enables the magazine to not
only be known by their logo/name but by their colour scheme.
However each of these different magazines use the colour
scheme in a different way as the first one uses mainly red
compared to the others. Also on the front cover of the magazines
there is a main image who uses direct line as the artists who are
on the front cover are directly looking at the camera, which would
make the reader feel included. They are all also wearing clothes
that would be classed as indie which goes with the sub-genre of
the magazine. This magazine also has the name of the artist or
band that is the main image, written on the front cover, in larger
writing than everything on the page, which makes it stand out,
catching the readers eye. This will divert the readers eyes to this
and it will make it clear of what sub-genre this music magazine is
and also what one of the articles will be about.

The contents pages also stick to the colour

scheme, following the codes and
conventions of magazines. They also
contain the logo of the magazine. He
contents pages both have the same kind
of layout on them which will make it
clearer for the reader to know where
things are especially if they are a frequent
customer of this certain magazine. The
contents pages also both have images
which will appeal to the reader especially
if they can relate to who or what the
image is of this will make them want to
read what the article is about. Hey also
both have some kind of ad near the
bottom of the page which stands out and
can appeal to the reader.

Indie fashion:

'Indie' is short for Individual, therefore the whole point of indie fashion is to dress differently to what is considered
the norm in the fashion industry.
Indie fashion is unique to each individual. People who make there own clothes or try different things instead of
buying what there friends are wearing and following the crowd. Indie clothes are trendy and make you stand out.
Rarely are Indie clothes brands name, most of the time its vintage/retro/home-made.
Indie clothes are often items of clothing that have gone out of fashion out people still wear them because they like
them, making them stand out. Or they are items of clothing that are around now but people do not find so
fashionable, however people who are into indie fashion style it out in their own way.
E.g. many people are now wearing glasses as part of the indie fashion, some are wearing scarfs with outfits even in
the summer because they think that the scarf looks good with the outfit. This is an example of indie fashion as this
not a part of the mainstream of fashion. One of the main things of indie fashion right now is making your own
clothes as this shows just how individual you really are compared to theirs.
One of the main points if indie is to be different and stand out in the crowd and fashion is one of the visible ways to
do this.
