HEAT TRANSFER FUNDAMENTALS

BUCKET CONVEYOR ANALOGY

OF HEAT TRANSFER
PROPERTY
DENSITY - how close together are the buckets (higher=better)
HEAT CAPACITY - how much do the buckets hold
(higher=better)
THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY - how quickly can you fill
and empty the buckets
(higher=better)
VISCOSITY - how much resistance is there to moving the buckets (lower=better)

VELOCITY - how fast do the buckets move (higher=better)

HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT - how much do you actually transfer when
everything is factored in

RETARDED BY ANTI-OXIDANT ADDITIVES

31

VAPOUR PRESSURE

LOW VAPOUR PRESSURE IS DESIRABLE AS

INCREASING VAPOUR PRESSURE GIVES
RISE TO:

HIGHER TENDENCY FOR SYSTEM LEAKS

HIGHER FLUID MAKE-UP

SAFETY CONCERN AS FLASH POINT IS REDUCED

HIGHER OPERATING PRESSURE

INCREASED CAPITAL & OPERATING COSTS

FLUIDS VAPOUR WILL MOMENTARILY IGNITE,
WHEN CONTACTED BY AN IGNITION SOURCE

CONSIDERATION FOR STORAGE AND HANDLING

SYSTEMS NORMALLY OPERATE AT
TEMPERATURES THAT EXCEED THE FLASH

33

FLAMMABILITY - AUTOIGNITION
THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE AT WHICH THE VAPOURS OF
THE FLUID, MIXED WITH AIR, WILL SPONTANEOUSLY
IGNITE

USUALLY OCCURS IN OIL SOAKED INSULATION

FLUID OXIDIZES DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF AIR
