An Introduction of Hyperion Planning

Hyperion Planning is an application that sits on top of the Essbase OLAP server and is used
by organizations to perform planning and budgeting. Hyperion Planning is a Budgeting and
Forecasting Application that drives collaborative, event based planning processes throughout the
organization for a wide range of Financial and Operational Needs.

you can reduce much the necessary time and effort of achieving the
goal.

 Bottom Up/Top Down Budgeting
Budgets are typically either set top-down or bottom-up,
with users entering their budget data either through web-based
forms or through Microsoft Excel, with Essbase then being used
to spread and allocate numbers down the hierarchies or add
them all up after the budgeting process has finished.

How Hyperion Planning is Better than Microsoft Excel
Spreadsheets are certainly a handy tool for running the numbers,
and they are particularly helpful if you want to define business rules
and calculations on-the-fly and automate the planning process using
VBA etc. Where you start to come unstuck though is when you want to
distribute the planning process amongst many users, and where the
planning process goes through many iterations, which becomes
increasingly difficult to control and orchestrate when you’re working
with dozens or hundreds of spreadsheets.

 Hyperion Planning Architecture
 Client Tier: The client tier consists of a planning web client and a
windows desktop client that administrators use to perform some
administrative tasks. you user client tier to enter data, perform
process management, manage metadata, manage users and
security, lunch business rules, copy versions, develop data forms,
and perform other administrative tasks.

 Middle Tier: The Middle tier consists of the Planning (Windows-

bases) server, a planning Java Application server, an Essbase
Administration Services Java Application server; and, the Shared
services and License server.

 Database tier:The database tier consists of a third-party

relational database management system (RDBMS) and Hyperion
System 9 BI+ Essbase analytics. The relational database is used
primarily to store the application’s definition. The following
