Poor Language Structure

PARALLEL WRITING
Change content
words for sentences
which have fixed
function words.

Eg.
I would choose the white
mouse because it has furry
skin/hair.
I would choose the
goldfish because it has
smooth scales.

Using all words

Avoid using all the words if unsure of
the meanings.
Train students to use own words.
No words given for Q.1 exercises (for
the near-miss students).

Sentences for Q.1 written in the

form of a story.
Avoid using the past forms of verbs
(past tenses) as the sentences
resemble an event like relating to a
story.

Irrelevant ideas, wrong /

inadequate vocabulary
Observe and apply What I see, I
write.
No guessing / assuming

Inappropriate Use/ Overuse

- Similes & adjectives;
especially in Q.1.
- Overusing adjectives
& adverbs which are
irrelevant to stimulus
in Q.1 & Q.2b.

- A boy who is as
hardworking as.. /A man
who is handsome ..
(Avoid writing similes for
every sentence in Q1/2b.)
For Q.3, frequent use is
acceptable but MUST be
relevant to storyline and go
in concord with the verbs
used.

Auxiliary verbs wrongly used or left

out.
- A man standing near the
shed.
- Two women is looking at
the baby in the pram.
- He not took his bag and
the bus driver not packed
it in compartment.
- My sister not likes blue.

Design more activities using

Auxiliary verbs
- Q.1 use of is/are with the
present participles (ing verbs),
- Q.2b use of modals with Simp.
Present form of verbs; and
- Q.3 use of was/ were with
ing verbs. (Some teachers/
pupils may play safe using Simp.
Past only.)

Using WHILE
A girl is eating her food
while talking.
A girl is eating her food
while talking to a boy.
A girl is eating while a
boy is talking to her.
(While- a conjunction
used to connect two
clauses which neednt
have two subjects as
most people presume.)

Add a complement to
complete the clause.
Alternate while with as for
sentences in Q.1 but the
second clause must repeat
the Sbj. and Aux. Verb Eg.
A girl is eating her food as
she is talking to a boy.
Or switch while to begin a
sentence.

Over-congested Ideas
Some A+ candidates are
too eager to write long
sentences to impress. Eg.
A man standing in front
of a toy shop wearing
long pants is giving a toy
to a girl who is taking it
from him while smiling
happily to him.
( TOO LONG &
CONFUSING! )

A shop wearing long pants ?

Break the sentence into two.
A man who is wearing long
pants and standing in front
of a toy shop is giving a toy
to a girl.
The girl is taking the toy
while smiling happily at the
man.

Repetition of ideas
A man is reading a magazine.

Two people are standing and talking

in front of the man reading a

magazine.
I will buy the blue dress because it
is cheap. As it is cheap, I can save
some money. If I can save the

money, I can buy other clothes.

The driver forgot to load Kamals
luggage. He closed the
compartment although he forgot
Kamals luggage. The bus went off
without loading Kamals luggage.
Kamal went for the trip but the
luggage was forgotten.

Note how the ideas keep repeating

in sentences as for the 3 sections.
Repeating certain words in
subsequent sentences is normal
but not phrases after phrases.
Eg. Two people are standing and talking
in front of the man holding the magazine.
As the dress is cheap, I can save money
to buy other clothes.
The driver forgot Kamals luggage, closed
the compartment and drove off. So, Kamal
went without his luggage.
