Sacrament

of Matrimony

Sacrament of Matrimony

Covenant by which a man and a

woman establish between themselves
a partnership of the whole of life and
which is ordered by its nature to the
good of its spouses and the
procreation and education of offspring.

Biblical Basis

Matt 19: 5,6

For this reason a man shall leave his father and
mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall
become one flesh. So then, they are no longer two
but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined
together, let not man separate
Ephesians 5:22-24
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as
you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of
the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body,
of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits
to Christ, so also wives should submit to their
husbands in everything.

How is matrimony
celebrated?

Marriage is based on the consent of the

contracting parties, that is, on their will to
give themselves, each to other, mutually
and definitively, in order to live a covenant
of faithful and fruitful love. Since marriage
establishes the couple in a public state of
life in the Church, it is fitting that its
celebration be public, in the framework of
a liturgical celebration, before the priest,
the witnesses, and the assembly of the
faithful.

Things needed to submit to the

church before marriage:
Baptism and confirmation certificate
Proof of freedom to marry
Marriage preparation certificate
Permissions and dispensations were
applicable
If either party has been previously
married, it is essential that freedom to
marry be established before any
marriage arrangements are confirmed.

Obligations of the Godparents and

Sponsors

Godparents are guardians of the faith.

In some cases they are enacted upon
to actually co-sign as guarantors in
the marriage certificate. The bride and
groom should treat this role not merely
as gift givers during nuptials; but as
co-sharers to the promise of a lifetime
of Christian commitment.

Impediments to Matrimony

Antecedent and perpetual impotence.

Consanguinity to the fourth collateral line,
including legal adoption to the second collateral
line.
Affinity in the direct line.
Prior bond
Holy Orders
Perpetual vows of chastity in a religious institute
Disparity of cult
Crimen also called "conjugicide".
Underage (at least 16 for males, 14 for females)
Abduction.

Divorce

termination of a marital union, the canceling

and/or reorganizing of the legal duties and
responsibilities of marriage, thus dissolving
the bonds of matrimony between a married
couple under the rule of law of the particular
country and/or state.

Annulment

a legal procedure for declaring

a marriage null and void. Unlike divorce, it
is usually retroactive, meaning that an
annulled marriage is considered to be
invalid from the beginning almost as if it had
never taken place.
