DEFINITION OF THE SACRAMENT

CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH
"By the sacred anointing of the sick and the
prayer of the priests the whole Church
commends those who are ill to the suffering
and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up
and save them. And indeed she exhorts them
to contribute to the good of the People of God
by freely uniting themselves to the Passion
and death of Christ."

CANON LAW

The anointing of the sick, by which the

Church commends to the suffering and
glorified Lord the faithful who are
dangerously ill so that he may support and
save them, is conferred by anointing them
with oil and pronouncing the words
prescribed in the liturgical books.

Anointing of the Sick - is a sacrament of

the Catholic Church that is administered to
a Catholic "who, having reached the age
of reason, begins to be in danger due to
sickness or old age", except in the case of
those who "persevere obstinately in
manifest grave sin".

BIBLICAL FOUNDATIONS
Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is
anyone in good spirits? He should sing praise. Is
anyone among you sick? He should summon the
presbyters of the church, and they should pray over
him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the
Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person,
and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed
any sins, he will be forgiven. (James 5:13-15)

Romans 8:17
Now if we are children, then we are heirsheirs of God
and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his
sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
James 5:14-16
Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the
church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the
name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will
make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If
they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore
confess your sins to each other and pray for each other
so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous
person is powerful and effective.

2 Timothy 2:11-12
Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will
also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with
him. If we disown him, he will also disown us.
1 Peter 4:13
But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of
Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is
revealed.

many of the sick at the same time who are duly prepared
and rightly disposed can be performed according to the
prescriptions of the diocesan bishop.
Canon 1006
This sacrament is to be conferred upon sick persons
who requested it at least implicitly when they were in
control of their faculties.
Canon 1007
The anointing of the sick is not to be conferred upon
those who obstinately persist in manifest serious sin.

EFFECTS OF THE SACRAMENT

A particular gift of the Holy Spirit.

Union with the passion of Christ.
An ecclesial grace.
A preparation for the final journey.

THE RITE OF THE SACRAMENT

The Rite of the Anointing of the Sick The Anointing of

the sick should be prepared by the Confession, and
followed by the reception of the Holy Communion.
Introductory Rites
The priest greets the sick person and others present.
Liturgy of the Word (reading of the Gospel)
Liturgy of Anointing
The priest gives the Holy Communion to the sick person.

PREPARATIONS
1. The person who is seriously ill or facing serious surgery
or treatment may ask for the sacrament of the anointing
of the sick. The rite specifically includes serious mental
illness as appropriate for the reception of the sacrament.
2. All that is involved in the celebration of this sacrament
must take into account the physical condition of the one
requesting it.

3. The pastoral concern of the celebrant, the texts

of the Churchs prayers and scriptures, the use
of music where appropriate, all contribute to the
catechesis of the person.
4. As much as is feasible, the community of faith
should be represented during the anointing;
however, as always, the physical condition of the
sick person is the determining factor.

REFLECTION
CHURCH
Eastern Orthodox Church
The teaching of the Eastern Orthodox Church on the Holy
Mystery (sacrament) of Unction is similar to that of the
Roman Catholic Church. However, the reception of the
Mystery is not limited to those who are enduring physical
illness. The Mystery is given for healing (both physical
and spiritual) and for the forgiveness of sin. For this
reason, it is normally required that one go to confession
before receiving Unction. Because it is a Sacred Mystery
of the Church, only Orthodox Christians may receive it.

Anglican churches
The 1552 and later editions of the Book of Common
Prayer omitted the form of anointing given in the original
(1549) version in its Order for the Visitation of the Sick,
but most twentieth-century Anglican prayer books do
have anointing of the sick

Other Christian Communities

Among Protestants, anointing is provided in a wide variety
of formats but, for the most part, however, it has fallen
into disuse. Protestant communities generally vary
widely on the sacramental character of anointing.

CONTEMPORARY ISSUE
Euthanasia
refers to the practice of intentionally ending a life in order
to relieve pain and suffering.
Christians are mostly against euthanasia. The
arguments are usually based on the beliefs that life is
given by God, and that human beings are made in God's
image. Some churches also emphasize the importance
of not interfering with the natural process of death.
