Background
Mortality and the
costs that are spent
to tackle the obesityrelated illnesses

In Korea, Rubus
Coreanus can also
treat the obesity
((Jeong, MY. 2013).

Synthesizing
medicines, such
as orlistat, etc.

The antiinflammatory
activity depend on the
degree of Rubus
coreanus ripening.
(Yang, HM. 2008)

Using traditional
medicine such as
green tea extract is
better.

This study will

distinguish the unripe
Rubus coreanus
Miquel as an antiobesity with the ripe
one.

Problems
What is the unripe Rubus
coreanus (uRC) activity on
obesity?
How does it compare to the ripe
Rubus coreanus (RC) ?

Purpose
To determine the anti-obesity
effects of the unripe Rubus
coreanus (uRC) and compare it
to the ripe Rubus coreanus (RC)

Obesity
According to WHO definition, the
Obesity is an overweight condition that is
an abnormal or excessive fat
accumulation that may impair health.

Obesity is a condition in which excess

body fat has accumulated due to lipids
changing into adipocytes and an increase
in the number of differentiated mature
Adipocyte cells which are regulated by genetic and
tissue
environmental factors such as nutrients.

Rubus coreanus Miquel

Rubus Coreanus is a kind of berries
found in South Korea, China and
Japan, commonly called Bokbunja
(Korea).
The dried fruit are used in traditional
herbal medicine for the treatment of
impotence, spermatorrhea,
enuresis,and asthma.

Antiinflammatory Activities of Rubus coreanus

Depend on the Degree of Fruit Ripening.
Ellagic acid attenuates high-carbohydrate, highfat diet-induced metabolic syndrome in rats.
Rubi Fructus (Rubus coreanus) Inhibits
Differentiation to Adipocytes in 3T3-L1 Cells.

Material and Methods

Results and Discussion

IN VITRO
3T3-L1 cells
(preadipocyte
cells)

Cell Culture

Differentiated
into adipocyte
cells

Measured Lipid
Accumulation
using Oil Red O
Staining

Measured its cells

viability using
MTT assay

Added by extract
of uRC and
extract of RC

According to Cell Viabilitys graph

The lowest number of cell viability is on 300 concentration

either in RC or uRC, its cell viability was decreased about 15%
of control cells.

According to The Result using Oil Red

O-Stained

The darker red color

of the cells, the greater
number of adipocyte
cells, which is
indicating that on the
uRC 300g/mL has a
lower number of
adipocyte cells, so that
it has the anti-obesity
effects.

And by using the graph of lipid accumulation vs concentration, has

indicated that the higher concentration of uRC, the lower lipid
accumulation. So that, these results indicate that uRC effectively block
adipocyte differentiation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes.

Conclusion
uRC administration significantly suppressed lipid
accumulation, body weight gain, adipose
tissue weight, and serum levels of TC, TG,
LDL-cholesterol, and glucose in the 3T3-L1
adipocyte of high fat diet-induced obese
mice.
