TROMBE WALL
A wall is built on the winter sun side of a
building with a glass external layer and a high
mass internal layer separated by a layer of
air.
Trombe walls work on the basic greenhouse
principle that heat from the sun in the form of
near-visible shorter-wavelength higherenergy ultraviolet radiation passes through
glass largely unimpeded.
CAVITY WALL
Cavity walls consist of two 'skins' separated
by a hollow space (cavity).
.The skins are commonly masonry such as
brick or concrete block. Masonry is an
absorbent material, and therefore will slowly
draw rainwater or even humidity into the wall.
. The cavity serves as a way to drain this water
back out through weep holes at the base of
the wall system or above windows.
WATER WALL
Water wall passive solar buildings are
usually the most attractive type of passive
solar home. The key element for a passive
solar home is thermal mass and water
provides this mass at a lower cost than
either concrete or phase change salts.
REASONS WE SHOULD
USE WATER WALL
Solar chimney
A solar chimney often referred to as a
thermal chimney is a way of improving
the natural ventilation of buildings by using
convection of air heated by passive solar
energy.
A simple description of a solar chimney is
that of a vertical shaft utilizing solar energy
to enhance the natural stack ventilation
through a building.
CAD(TAS) SOLAR
CHIMNEY MODEL
POSITIVE ASPECTS
Reduced reliance on wind and wind driven
ventilation
Improved control of air flow though a building
Greater choice Improved ventilation rates on still,
hot days
of air intake (i.e. leeward side of building)
Improved air quality and reduced noise levels in
urban areas
Increased night time ventilation rates
Allow ventilation of narrow, small spaces with
minimal exposure to external elements
