The Battle of Badr

By the Youth class Prophet

Muhammad

Date / Map
The Battle of Badr
was fought on
March 17, 624. (17
Ramadan C.E., 2
years after Hijra
in the Islamic
calendar)

Whats the Reason?

Life in Makkah was becoming difficult for the
Muslims. The growing oppression and tortures of the
Kuffar became unbearable. Thus the constant
migration of Muslims from Mecca to Medina with the
least of their belongings and wealth. Muslims would
escape to Medina merely for the sake of worshiping
Allah (SWT) in peace.
Meccan idol worshippers would capture Muslims.
They would go as far as the outskirts of Medina and
torture them.
The Muslims, led by Rasulullah (S) planned to regain
their stolen property from previous years that was in
a caravan passing along its way from Syria.

Muslim Army
The Muslim force was unable to intercept the
caravan at the oasis of Badr, because Abu
Sufyan took another route, however the
Meccan soldiers refused to leave without a
battle.
Prophet Muhammad (S) called a Shura
council and gathered a force of 314 Muslim
soldiers with only one horse or camel for
every 3-4 men.

Key Points
The Meccan idol worshippers headed to Badr to
attack the Muslim forces.
This was the first major battle between the Muslims
and idol worshippers.
The Muslims would fight to defend themselves and
survive to continue practicing Islam.
If the Muslims were defeated, Islam would be wiped
out for good. But from that day on, Islam would rise.
The day of the Battle of Badr was also known as
Yaum Al Furqan (Yaum Al Taqqal Jaman).

Casualties
Al-Bukhari lists Meccan losses as
seventy dead and seventy captured.
Muslim losses are commonly listed at
fourteen killed.

Results
The Muslims who fought were especially rewarded
by Allah (SWT), who would now forgive all of their
sins for the enormous contribution they had made
by fighting for the sake of Allah (SWT) in the Battle
of Badr.
They prayed to Allah (SWT) to help them end the
battle with victory on their side, despite the fact that
their forces were relatively small compared to the
opposing side.
On the day of the battle, the Muslims would be
victorious and in turn, Islam was a strong and
acknowledged Religion.

Extra notes
There are several hadiths where Prophet
Muhammad (S) discusses Angel Jibreel and
the role he played in the battle.
The battle itself only lasted a few hours and
was over by the early afternoon.
The Battle of Badr was the only battle that
the Angels fought alongside Muslims. All
other Battles the Angels were present to
make the Muslim soldiers more in numbers.

Quranic Reference
Allah had helped you at Badr, when ye were a
contemptible little force; then fear Allah; thus
May ye show your gratitude. Remember thou
saidst to the Faithful: "Is it not enough for you
that Allah should help you with three thousand
angels (Specially) sent down? "Yea, - if ye
remain firm, and act aright, even if the enemy
should rush here on you in hot haste, your Lord
would help you with five thousand angels
Making a terrific onslaught. Qur'an: Sura 3:123125 (Surah Al- Imran)
