 The Statue of

Liberty is a
colossal neoclassical sculpture
on Liberty Island in the
middle of New York Harbor,
in Manhattan, New York City.
The statue, designed by
Frdric Auguste Bartholdi, an
Italian-French sculptor,[7] and
dedicated on October 28, 1886,
was a gift to the United States
from the people of France.
The statue is of a robed female
figure representing Libertas,
the Roman goddess of
freedom.

President Cleveland dedicated the

Statue of Liberty on Oct. 28, 1886.

ORIGIN
The origin of

the Statue of Liberty

project is sometimes traced to a comment
made by French law professor and
politician douard Ren de Laboulaye in
mid-1865. In after-dinner conversation at
his home near Versailles, Laboulaye, an
ardent supporter of the Union in the
American Civil War, is supposed to have
said: "If a monument should rise in the
United States, as a memorial to their
independence, I should think it only
natural if it were built by united efforta
common work of both our nations.

She is located in the New York Harbor on

Ellis Island.

CONSTRUCTION ON FRANCE
On

his return to Paris in 1877,

Bartholdi concentrated on
completing the head, which
was exhibited at the
1878 Paris World's Fair.
Fundraising continued, with
models of the statue put on
sale. Tickets to view the
construction activity at the
Gaget, Gauthier & Co.
workshop were also offered.

She greeted thousands of

immigrants and visitors
as they entered
New York Bay
and arrived into the
United States.

The Statue of Liberty is a

symbol of freedom known
throughout the world.
She used to be called the
Liberty Enlightening
the World.
Today, some people call her
Lady Liberty.

She is made of hammered

copper sheets.
Overtime, the acidic rain
has turned the copper
sheets into a rusty
greenish color.

Lady Liberty is 151 feet tall.

She stands upon a concrete-and-granite pedestal.
With the base and pedestal, she stands a total of 305 feet.

THE PEDESTAL
The committees in

the United States faced

great difficulties in obtaining funds for the
construction of the pedestal. The Panic of
1873 had led to an economic depression that
persisted through much of the decade

The statue of liberty

is a woman escaping
the chains of tyranny,
which lie at her feet.

Her right hand holds

a burning torch that
represents liberty.

She wears a crown with seven rays.

These rays represent the seven seas
and continents of the world.

Her left hand holds a

tablet inscribed with the
date July 4, 1776 (in Roman numerals).

This is the day the United States

declared its independence.

The Statue of Libertys freedom message is this:

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
