existential situations that confront all human beings in the
passage of their lives. Sociologist Daniel Bell

TRUTH

is the point of reference our culture needs.

To remember: Whatever your

WORLDVIEW may be, sooner or
later, youll come to the conclusion
that TRUTH does matter.

A Proposed Definition of Truth

In defining truth, it is first helpful to note what truth is
not:
Truth is not simply whatever works. This is the
philosophy of pragmatism an ends-vs.-means-type
approach. In reality, lies can appear to work, but they
are still lies and not the truth.
Truth is not simply what is coherent or
understandable.
A group of people can get together and form a
conspiracy based on a set of falsehoods where they all
agree to tell the same false story, but it does not make
their presentation true.

Truth is not what makes people feel good.

Unfortunately, bad news can be true.
Truth is not what the majority says is true.
Fifty-one percent of a group can reach a wrong
conclusion.
Truth is not simply what is believed.
A lie believed is still a lie.
Truth doesnt contradict itself.

Etymological Definition: Gk. [altheia]; Lat.veritas;

The Greek word for truth is

aletheia, which literally means to
un-hide or hiding nothing.
It conveys the thought that truth
is always there, always open and
available for all to see, with
nothing being hidden or obscured.
TRUTH IS AUTONOMOUS

Relative truth-

Truth that is true at

only one time and at one place. It's true to
some people and not to others. It's true
now but it may not have been true in the
past and it may not be again in the future,
it's always subject to change. It is also
subject to perspective of people

Absolute truth-Whatever is true at one

time and at one place is true at all time's
and at all places. What is true for one
person is true for all person's. Truth is true

Subjective
Morality
When we claim that
morality is subjective, if
any given act is wrong for
me, it isnt necessarily
wrong for anyone else
(although it could be). The
claim that morality is
subjective is essentially
the claim that different
moral standards can apply
to different people.

Objective
Morality
When we claim that
morality is objective,
what were claiming is
that moral facts are
universal; they hold true
regardless of who we
apply them to. If morality
is objective, then if any
given act is wrong for
me, its wrong for
everyone else as well.
