Introduction
The aim of the new design is to make the MS
Research videos look more high-end using
a graphical style inspired from broadcast TV.
The new design incorporates commonly
used elements and optional extras. At the
most basic, each video only really needs the
Video Title and the analysts Name &
Title.
From a video editors point of view there will
be more elements on screen but this will be
a case of following instructions detailed in
the script. Adding most of these elements
will be as simple as copying and pasting
from a master template into the timeline,
and amending text which will be provided by
the video producers.

The Script / Video Samples

A script or transcript is the best way to communicate what elements are required and
when they should appear in the video.
On the following page is a sample script. Please note that elements are all in red so
they stand out from the script. The video for the script can be found here:

SCRIPT WITH INSTRUCTIONS
[NT: Nishant Sood, Asia Credit Strategy]
[VT: ASIA CREDIT STRATEGY: Disinflation Creates
Credit Winners and Losers]
Hi, Im Nishant Sood from the Asia Credit Research team at
Morgan Stanley. In this video, I will go through what
disinflation means for Asian credit.
Two important macro trends have impacted the credit
landscape in Asia recently:
[WS: Important macro trends impacting Asian credit
landscape]
[BT: 1. Slowing Growth in China]
slowing growth in China, and
[BT: 1. Slowing Growth in China
2. Disinflation in producer prices, most notably
commodities]
the disinflation in producer prices, most notably
commodities.
This creates both winners and losers in credit. We see China
High Yield Property and Indian Investment Grade as the
winners, while the Metals and Mining sector will be more
challenged. [end WS, BT]
[ST: Base case is for growth in China to recover
moderately]
Our base case is for growth in China to recover moderately in
2nd half of this year, but the trajectory so far has been
disappointing and excess capacity in the industrial sectors
remains an overhang, creating downward pressures on
resource demand.
[Slide 1 yellow line > green > light blue > blue]
As we see here, year-to-date Brent crude prices are down 8%,
iron ore 7% copper prices are down 8%, and coal 6%. As a
result, PPI turned negative in 1st quarter last year and has
been trending lower since.
[end Slide 1]
[ST: Disinflation is mostly a good thing for Asian
credit]
Disinflation is mostly a good thing for Asian credit, as Asia is

Branding Template
All the elements for the new design are in an Adobe
Premiere project file, in a Branding Template
folder.
As of writing, the current folder is Branding
Template- v130710.
In the future, this template will be updated and
follows the date conversion YYMMDD.
It is also best to either import this template file at the
start of each project OR create a MASTER project file,
whichever best suits your workflow. However in the
latter case, be aware that the template file will be
updated periodically so any MASTER project file will
also have to be amended.
The Media folder contains all assets used in the
templates.

Branding Template- Folders

Here is a brief description of the folders:
Gfx
-contains Premiere generated graphic elements that
can be ignored BUT do not delete
1 Strap Elements
-all the Bottom Strap elements in a timeline. Just copy
and paste into your working timeline
2 Bottom Strap
-there are several versions of Bottom Strap and these
can be selected and customised here
3 Boxes- Multi-Interview
-Here are the elements for the Global Strategy Forum
videos. There are many different elements, with and
without location straps and all with backgrounds.
4 Box MB BulletPoints
-Here is the template for bullet points in box- style.
5 BG
-Want to change the background for the Box elements?
This is where to change it.
6 Wipe
-This is an added extra (more later)

Workflow
Here is a suggested the workflow for a basic 3-minute
single analyst video:
1.Put together a basic edit of the video with bumpers
but without the extra design elements.
2.From the STRAP-ELEMENTS template, copy and
paste the
PC- Bottom Strap into the timeline. Extend / reduce
to desired duration.
3.Resize the camera footage to fit the frame. Perform
any colour correction and audio edits/ sweetening.
4.Open up (double-click) PC- Bottom Strap and
make any adjustment. Enable the BLACK layer if
necessary.
5.Referring to the script, copy and paste desired
elements from the STRAP-ELEMENTS template into
the main timeline and adjust their durations.
6.If multiple instances of elements are needed, either
duplicate the project OR import (from) the Template
Project.
7.Add in any slides to the top most layer.

1 Strap Elements
The folders in the seqs bin are organised in
order of usage, with 1 Strap Elements being
the most used.
This contains:
Text folder
-a folder containing all text elements used in
the template sequence
STRAP- ELEMENTS- Copy & Paste
sequence:
-This is the template sequence and contains
most of the branding elements.
-Applying these elements to the main timeline
is as simple as copy and paste.
-By default all elements have an animated IN
and a simple CROSS DISSOLVE OUT.
-Other than Name & Title, they are all 30sec
long.
-The following pages with explain each of the
elements in turn, with font settings. However it
is best to copy and paste from the template as
this will also copy the settings across.
-The bottom most layer- Bars and Tone is
deliberately locked since there is no reason

1 Strap Elements

STRAP- ELEMENTS- Copy & Paste

sequence contains:
-Bottom Strap with 3 animated versions.
-Name & Title
-Global Strategy Forum text
-Summit text
-Video Title

-White Strap text

-White Straps in 4 different lengths
-Price Target text
-Bullet Points (2-3 line version)
-Courtesy text and black

Bottom Strap
The new design uses a Bottom Strap that
displays all text information and includes the
Morgan Stanley logo.
This strap will appear after the Opening
Bumper, remains on screen at ALL times
except during slides (more later), and taken
off before the Closing Bumper.
The strap incorporates:

-A solid black box where the Morgan Stanley

logo and additional logos reside

-A blue stripe where text information

appears
-An optional white stripe for additional
information.

The template file allows the Bottom Strap

to be customised, such as
-changing the colour (for different types of
video)
-adding a black layer (so it is no longer
semi-transparent)
-and adding other branding elements (such
as the Alpha Wise logo).

Bottom Strap- How to Use

In the STRAP- ELEMENTS- Copy & Paste
sequence, there are 3 PC- Bottom Strap,
each with its own animation. It is up to the
editor to decide which to use. However it is
recommended that No Anima version be
used when dealing with wide footage (see
page: Wide Screen Footage).
No Anima
- has a simple CROSS
DISSOLVE. Please use this version when
dealing wide screen footage
Ver 1
- custom wipe transition from side
Ver 2
- custom wipe transition in from
below
Note:
Ver 1 and Ver 2
-the IN transitions are 15 frames long
-The OUT transitions start at 5mins exactly
(5:00:00)

Customising the Bottom Strap

It is possible to further customise the
Bottom Strap
-just double click the PC- Bottom
Strap
-Or open PC- Bottom Strap in the 2
Bottom Strap folder
Now just click ON the layers that are
required.

Alphawise-Logo
-Switch On for AlphaWise videos
-There will be more logos in the future and
they will be played here.
MS-Logo
-The Morgan Stanley logo. This should
always be ON.
PC- Bottom Strap Grad- Normal
-This layer contains the dark blue strap and
should be used in most cases.
PC- Bottom Strap Grad- Summit
-This layer is used for Summits. It contains a
Strap Colour- Conference Colour layer

PC- Bottom Strap Grad- GSF

-This layer contains the grey strap for
Global Strategy Forum videos.
BLACK: Black Video
-This layer contains Black Video
exactly the same size as the PC.
-Switch this layer on to cut the semitransparent look of the the Bottom
Strap.
-This should be used when working
with wide footage see page: Wide
Screen Footage).

Bottom Strap for Summits

It is now possible to create custom coloured
straps for special videos such as Investor
Summit / Conference videos.
However the video producer must provide the
exact colour code as this must match the style
requirements of each event.
It is also best to find out the exact name of the
event and send a sample to the video producer
to double check and approve.
To change the colour:
-Open PC- Bottom Strap Grad- Summit
-Open Strap Colour- Conference Colour
layer
-Choose the colour to use.
Note:
The STRAP- ELEMENTS- Copy & Paste
sequence has a custom text graphic for
Summits and GSF:
Strap- Conference
Strap- GSF

Name & Title (NT)

Analyst and guest names will appear as
soon as they appear full screen and for
approx. 6-7 secs. However if there is a
extra long name or title then please hold
on screen for 1-2secs longer.
-Copy and paste Strap- Name & Title
from STRAP- ELEMENTS- Copy & Paste
template.
-This has an animated IN and a simple
CROSS DISSOLVE OUT. Editors can adjust
the duration if necessary.

Video Title (VT)

A new addition is the Video Title. This is the
name of the report and will be a reminder to
viewer what video they are watching.
However the Video Title can be replaced by
Section Titles and Bullet Points if
requested.
For single analyst 3-minute videos, the Video
Title will appear after the Name & Title OR
as soon as the Bottom Strap appears if there
is no Name & Title.

Script Example:
[VT: ASIA CREDIT STRATEGY:
Disinflation Creates Credit Winners
and Losers]

Unless
otherwise requested, the Video Title

-Colour: White (R:255, G:255, B:255)

Examples:
QATAR BANKS: Three key investor questions
MACRO MEETS MICRO - The Second Leg?
US ECONOMICS - Heading for the Exit

Section Title- Optional (ST)

Another addition are optional Section
Titles. These are used to highlight what
the analyst is currently saying- normally
at a paragraph level. These may not
used in every video and are at the
discretion of the video producer.
Font Settings:
-Font: Arial Regular, Mixed Case
-Size: 22
-Colour: White (R:255, G:255, B:255)
Script Example:

recover moderately]
Our base case is for growth in China to

White Straps (WS)

White Straps are another addition and
have a number of different uses:
-as a location title
-a title for Bullet Points
-an alternative to Section Titles
White Straps are optional and may not
used in every video. Also since the text for
White Strap will vary, the editor must
decide which length of White Strap to
use. There are 4 sizes to choose from.
Font Settings:
-Font: Arial Bold, UPPER CASE, Size: 15
-Colour: Black (R:0, G:0, B:0)

Script Example:
[WS: Location: Peakdowns Mine,
Queensland]
The Queensland coal assets
to recover to FY12 levels. [end WS:]

White Strap + Price Target Text

(PT)

Price Targets use White Straps and

additional text in the blue stripe to highlight
stock information. This information will be
provided by the video producers.

Timing:
White strap animates on first.
Text in the Blue Stripe animated on 20
frames later.

Script Example:
[WS: Our Preferred Stock In Korea
Financials]
[PT: Samsung Card (029780.KS),
Overweight, Price Target: W 46000]
We are putting Samsung Card as our
preferred stock and last year. [end
WS, PT]

Text in the Blue Stripe:

Stock Name (1st Line):
-Font: Arial Bold, Mixed Case
-Size: 20
-Colour: White (R:255, G:255, B:255)
Price Target (2nd Line):
-Font: Arial Regular, Mixed Case
-Size: 18
-Colour: Lt Blue (R:202, G:234, B:255)

White Strap + Bullet Points (BP)

There are 3 ways of displaying Bullet
Points. The video producer will decide
which case will be used:
i.Single Bullet Points at a time- only one
point appears at a time with the older one
fading out.
Useful when the script detailing each point
is quite long.

Bullet Point text:

-Font: Arial Bold, Mixed Case
-Size: 17
-Colour: White (R:255, G:255, B:255)

ii.2-3 Bullet Points - when the number is

small and the text can be displayed in the
blue stripe. Useful when each bullet point is
quite short
iii.Box style Bullet Points (more later).
Note:
Sometimes copying and pasting the text from
WORD may add extra spacing between the
bullet points and the text. Please replace these
with a single space.
Also add extra spaces to the start of the
second line if bullet points are longer than 1

The 3rd way of displaying Bullet Points is

in BOX STYLE, used when there are many
bullet points. This makes use of a floating
box similar to Multi-person interviews.
CASE iii) MB Bullet Points- Script Example:

Case iii) Using Box- MB

BOX STYLE Bullet Points can be found in the 4
Box- MB- Bullet Points folder.
Gfx- PSD
-contains the original PSD gfx. This does not
need to be accessed.
PreComp
-contains more styling information. This does not
need to be accessed unless the editor wised to
make changes to the styling.

Text: Txt-MB- BulletPt Text-2-Lines
-Text graphics with titles on 1 and 2 lines.
Box- MB sequence
-This is a 60sec sequence already with Txt
animation.
-Locked layers do not need to be used.
-Video layer 6 is the ghost layer.
-The editor only needs to replace the text and
adjust the animation timings.
-The sequence is designed to sit on the main
timeline.
-It has a hole and any video underneath will be

Case iii) Using Box- MB

Procedure in using Box- MB seq

-Decide whether to use Txt-M-B- BulletPt Text-1-Line or Text: Txt-M-B- BulletPt
Text-2-Lines
-ALT-replace video layers 6 and 7 if necessary.
-Adjust the CROPPING and timing of video layer 7.
-Drag Box- MB onto the main timeline (and delete its audio) and adjust its duration
-Adjust the size of the footage in the window
-Apply any transitions IN and OUT

Little-Big Box (LB)

The Little-Big box is a way of displaying
footage or slides with the speaker visible on
screen.
There are 2 versions depending on whether
the strap is visible or not.
Script Example: LB- without Strap

Using the Little-Big Box (LB)

The Little-Big Box is very similar to the MediumBig Box in how it is created and used, except
that there is a SEPARATE sequence for the the
BIG box contents. BOX STYLE Bullet Points can
be found in the 4 Box- MB- Bullet Points
folder.
Box- LB
-This is the version to be used without the strap
Box- LB+Strap
-In this version, the elements have been shifted
up to give space for the bottom strap.
-Note that the strap must still be put in from the
STRAP- ELEMENTS- Copy & Paste sequence.
Box- LB- Footage
-Put the BIG Box footage in this sequence.
-Note that there is no need to resize and
reposition, but just make sure that the footage
fills the sequence.

Courtesy (CT)
In the future we may be
using footage supplied from
clients. In these cases it is
important to recognise the
source of the footage using
the Courtesy element in the
template.
Just copy and paste the
COURTESY element. You will
have to adjust the size of the
BLACK.
Note:
-the text is ALIGNED RIGHT so
the BLACK should be
expanded to the left.

Courtesy text:

Multi-Person Interview Boxes
As mentioned before, all the BOX STYLE templates work
the same way and incorporate use the same animated
blue background. If there is a need to change this
background, it can be changed for all Boxes in one go, in
the BG sequence in the 5 BG folder.
-The BG sequence is 5mins long.
-It contains a looping animation.
-In order to change the background, just replace this
looping animation.

Wide Footage Examples

Generally all footage should be resized to
fill the frame. This should be the case for
ALL SINGLE PERSON interviews. However
this may not be possible for 2 person
interviews or special videos such as
Touchscreen videos when it is necessary
to shoot WIDE.
In these cases:
-It is still necessary to resize and move the
picture vertically.
-Since the dark blue strap is semitransparent, notice the picture cut off in the

by making dark blue

switching on the

refer to the
template). This will
crop out any extras
at the bottom of

Wide Footage Examples

There may be cases when
the interview was shoot
too tight and resizing is not
possible.
In the example notice that
both the subjects
shoulders are right on the
edge of frame.
In these cases it will be
necessary to introduce
black bands on the top and
bottom of frame. However
please try to keep there to
a minimum AND centre the
image vertically (notice
the same amount of black
above and below the
picture).
