Benefits:

2x Greater Wear Area

Open impellers use the

full front face of the
impeller as wear area.
Longer part life due to
larger wear area.
Greater Energy $avings
due to renewable
clearances which restore original
factory performance time after
time.

Facts:

Higher Cost to Operate

Reverse vane design

experiences focused
wear at the nose of the
impeller and casing.
With no wear rings as
standard, once the casing
and impeller are worn
they must be replaced.
Due to this wear the unit cannot
maintain its original performance
via adjustments and over life.

Lower Parts Consumption as there

are no focused wear areas. No
need to replace impeller and
casings prematurely.

Higher cost to operate.

Better Solids Handling Capability.

High priced repair parts.

Higher parts consumption as

casing and impeller must be
replaced more often.

Facts:
Comparing open and reverse vane
impellers reveals no consistent
advantage in NPSH or Efficiency.
Wear occurs at the high velocity
area on the impeller nose and
casing AS WELL
as on the cover. Casing will be
replaced more often than a Goulds
product.
Open impeller seal chamber
pressure and thrust loads rise only
slightly by moving the impeller
thousandths of an inch.

Claims:
Claim better NPSHR and
Efficiency.
Claim lower repair costs
because rear cover is wear
surface. Not true AND spare
parts pricing is higher than
Goulds - customers lose all
around.
Claim more consistent axial
thrust loads and seal chamber
pressure and longer seal and
bearing life. Not relevant as
explained on last page.
Claim in-shop impeller
adjustment off the rear cover
as a plus.

SealChambers
Chambers
Seal
Facts:

FMS/L uses straight ribs in the box.

Goulds only uses these in Cast Iron
stuffing boxes as these are typically not on
abrasive, high solid content services.
Lab testing has proven straight ribs can
cause the seals to fail at 1%-2% solids.
Taperbore with VPE can handle up to
10% solids with no seal failures
1) Solids/liquid mixture flows
toward seal chamber
2) Turbulent zone
3) Clean liquid flows towards
seal
4) Low pressure zone created
by vane particle ejector
5) Seal faces flush with clean
liquid

Basic seal chambers (Standard Bore and

Big Bore) are very similar.
FMS/L actually can shorten seal life by
stopping centrifugal motion in the
stuffing box and creating a direct path
for solids to enter the mechanical seal.
Straight ribs can stop rotation in
the box which is critical to ejecting
particles. Solids are then forced
to the top of the rib then shot
directly at the seal due to the flow
pattern with no chance to escape.

The Truths about Shaft Deflection

Seal Chamber

Shaft Deflection vs L3/D4

Shaft Deflection is a measure of the actual

deflection at the mechanical seal faces.

L3/D4 is a shaft stiffness ratio, based on the

equation for deflection of a simple beam.

Simplify
y L3 / D4

Seal Chamber

Shaft Deflection vs L3/D4

L3/D4 simplifies pump shaft problem. Assumes

shaft is a simple beam.

L3/D4 assumes Load = W and Elastic Modulus =

E are constant from one pump to another.

Comparing L3/D4 from one pump design to

another can be misleading.

Seal Chamber

Shaft Deflection vs L3/D4

L3/D4 comparison does not account for the hydraulic and

mechanical pump design. A design which reduces radial
load helps to lower cost of key pump components
(impeller, shaft, etc.) Examples are Open Impeller, and low
flow casing and impeller design.

L3/D4 evaluation may cause customers to pay extra money

for equipment that is not superior in reliability and design.

Seal Chamber

Shaft Deflection vs L3/D4

Must consider actual shaft deflection at seal

faces when evaluating pumps. Must be less
than 0.002 inch at seal faces.
