Automatic Monitoring Baby

Cradle Embedded System
Design

The group members are from 3 different FYP groups. The FYPs are as
follows:

To make a cheap device that is indigenously produced for local

market.
The user (mother) is alarmed only when the baby makes
noise, eliminating the need for continuous monitoring.
An automatic cradle, using a DC Gear Motor assembly is
introduced, with two modes of operation.
No product in market available that has both monitoring and
automatic cradle.
A complete product prototype, can lift weight upto 4 KG.

Motivation

The product enables the user to remotely listen to the noise made by an infant.
The transmission occurs only when noise is detected.
Simultaneously, the swing is enabled to quieten the baby in the absence of
mother.
The mode described above is Automatic mode.
The other mode is Manual mode where only the swing motion of cradle
enabled.
Automatic and Manual mode can be used together. (will be shown in demo)
The device is unique since other devices do not offer both monitoring and
automatic cradle.
Moreover, just the baby monitor or the automatic cradle available in market are
very expensive.

Introduction

Technical Details

Because it is stable
Because it has built-in oscillator
Because it has built-in ADC
Because it has a lot of libraries (saves time)
Because it doesnt need a programmer
Because it is plug and play, doesnt need time to set it up
Because it uses C++ dialect for programming
Because it is just the prototype
Because even 8051 is expensive, we design SPP for large scale production
Because we are in development phase and we are required to complete the project on
short amount of time

Why Arduino?

Why Arduino Mega2560?

Because our Relays operate at 5V
Because we wanted to spend money once on a better Arduino so that it can be used for
complex projects later on

Technical Details
Voice Amplification Module:
Voice input from microphone is fed to OpAmp (gain 100 approximately)
in LM324 IC and the output is fed to the Arduino.
It consists of a BJT transistor (BC548) used as a switch and a diode
(1N4001) connected in reverse mode parallel to relay coil. The input
from Arduino turns the BJT on which in turn energizes the relay coil to
switch on the motor.

Transmitter/Receiver Pair:
It was taken out of RC Toy Car. Transmitter is connected to Arduino with
a relay and Receiver is connected to a speaker system.

Arduino takes inputs from different modules and generates

necessary control signals.

Block Level Diagram

A simple commercially available audio baby monitor starts from

12,000-16,000/- rs.
Video Baby Monitor roughly starts from 20,000/- rs.
Automatic Cradle cost starts from about 28,000/- rs.
Commercially available baby monitors do not have a cradle.
The purpose was to fill in this lapse and build a complete product
that is cheap as well as serves dual purpose of a automatic cradle
and baby monitor.
The device only alarms the user when it detects a noise, thus
eliminating the need of continuous monitoring, as opposed to
conventional devices.

Comparison with Other Products

The prototype of our product costs 7,700/- rs, much cheaper than
commercially available cradles and baby monitors.
Without Arduino and other expensive components used due to
shortage of time, this cost can be brought down to 5,000/- rs.
To counter the issue of load shedding, we will also include a 12 V
rechargeable battery, to run the device in case of a power
breakdown.

Cost Effective.
Prototype ready for Mass Production.
One-off hybrid device combining both a Baby Monitor and a
Automatic Cradle.
Indigenous Product for Local Market.
Everything takes power directly from a 220 V switch, thus
eliminating the hassle of replacing the batteries for various
modules.
