WHAT ARE STEM CELLS

Stem cells are cells that can transform into any
type of other cells.
Contain the ability to:
Transform into any other type of cell
Self Renewal

There are two types of stem cells: embryonic stem

cells and adult stem cells.

EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS

Embryonic stem cells can convert into any type of
cell.
Derived from embryos of 4-5 days after
fertilization.

ADULT STEM CELLS

Adult stem cells have a limit of the cells

they can transform into.
Derived from adults. They are typically
found in the blood, bone marrow, skin,
muscles, brain and liver of adults.

IMPORTANCE

Stem cells have the ability to cure or treat many

diseases that do not contain any yet.

FOR EXAMPLE

PARKINSONS DISEASE
When damaged cells that fail to produce
dopamine.
Dopamine is the chemical that helps humans
have smooth coordinated muscle movements.
Treatment: insertion of stem cells into the
infected body so that the stem cells can transform
into dopamine.

ALZHEIMERS DISEASE
A progressive deadly disease that degrades and
kills brain cells that later lead to memory loss,
cognitive decline and behavioral problems.
Treatment: A transplant of neural stem cells so
that the infected patient can produce new healthy
neurons.

POINT OF VIEWS

Catholics: It is wrong therefore it should not be

used.
Judaism: It is okay to use the embryonic stem
cells as long as it is used for medical or
therapeutic purposes.
Episcopal Church: Supports the use of embryonic
stem cells as long as the embryos would have
been destroyed otherwise.

Obtaining embryonic stem cells is to perform

embryonic stem cells were used in medicine,
couples will get pregnant of purpose to then sell
the embryos to science.

Scientists are doing research on expanding the amount of cells

that adult stem cells can transform into
The National Institute of Health states that, it is now possible to
reprogram adult somatic cells to become like embryonic stem cells
(induced pluripotent stem cells) through the introduction of
embryonic genes.

PRE-IMPLANTATION GENETIC
DIAGNOSIS.
New technique discovered including the removal
of one cell from a cluster of approximately ten
cells that make up an embryo in its earlier
stages. Scientists can then grow a stem cell line
from that one cell.
The embryo will still be intact

ASK YOURSELF: SHOULD THEY BE

USED?
Obtaining embryonic stem cells is to kill a
defenseless life.
No life should be killed to save another.
Alternatives exists, all we need is to do more
research to test its reliability and safety.
