ABOUT THE COMPANY

India has an ambitious target of power production by Nuclear
Power Reactors to meet future energy needs of the country.
Two Indian companies, Nuclear Power Corporation of India
Limited (NPCIL) and Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited
(BHAVINI) are responsible organization to construct thermal
reactors and fast breeder reactors respectively in the country.
NPCIL is currently operating seventeen nuclear reactors and
constructing five reactors.
Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited formed as a company
and registered under Companies Act, 1956 on 22nd October 2003
under the administrative control of Department of Atomic Energy
is presently involved in construction and commissioning of 500
MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam.

CONT
Kalpakkam is an important nuclear establishment of Department of
Atomic Energy of India and this coastal site is situated 70Km south
of Chennai.
The PFBR is the forerunner for the future Fast Breeder Reactors to
be constructed in various parts of our country including two more
reactors at Kalpakkam to meet the future energy needs of India.
BHAVINI is constructing Mega Project PFBR and the reactor is
now in advanced stage of construction.

What I have done

Studied some general features of the FAST
BREEDER REACTOR.
General idea about Prototype Fast Breeder
Reactor.
Design references of the intake structure of the
prototype.
General precautionary measures to be considered
during the construction and maintenance of PFBR.

Site location

SITE DESCRIPTION
The entire PFBR plant is divided into
nuclear and power islands
The PFBR plant located in the shore
takes condenser cooling water from
sea.
Sand entering into pump must be
avoided.

CONCLUSION
The PFBR intake structure is a design and
construction marvel.
Understood the various factors that governing the
PFBR.
Have got the idea about the various components
in the Intake structure.
Understood the safety measurement that have to
be followed in the Nuclear reactor.
