ENDANGERED SPECIES

Anendangered speciesis aspeciesoforganismsfacing a very

high risk ofextinction.
The phrase is used vaguely in common parlance for any species
fitting this description, but its use byconservation
biologiststypically refers to those designated Endangered in
theIUCN Red List, where it is the second most
severeconservation statusfor wild populations,
followingCritically Endangered.
There are currently 3079animalsand 2655plantsclassified as
Endangered worldwide, compared with 1998 levels of 1102 and
1197, respectively.[1]The amount, population trend, and
conservation status of each species can be found in the Lists of
organisms by population.
Many nations havelawsoffering protection toconservation
reliant species: for example, forbiddinghunting, restricting land
development or creating preserves.

WAYS TO PROTECT
ENDANGERED ONES

Defending and strengthening the Endangered Species Act, which

provides an essential legal safety net to prevent the loss of plant and animal
species to extinction.

Holding federal agencies and others accountablefor complying with laws

protecting rare and endangered species using cooperation, persuasion, and-where necessary--litigation.

Advocating for increased fundingfor private landowner incentives and other

conservation programs that benefit endangered species.

Protecting and restoring the habitatson which endangered species and

other wildlife depend for their survival, and encouraging wildlife-friendly land
management practices.

Reducing threats to wildlifethat can lead to their endangerment and

extinction, such as loss of habitat, contamination of water and spread of invasive
species.

HOW THE ANIMALS

BECAME EXTINCT

In the distant past, several species of animals became extinct

through natural causes.
There might have been a change in the climate of a particular
region, and the plants or animals on which the species lived
could have died out because of the change in the weather.
Or one animal might have been destroyed by another that was
stronger or faster.
But ever since human beings have been on Earth, and especially
in the last hundred years, animal species have become extinct
because of hunting, pollution, or the destruction of the places
where they live.

HOW DID THE ANIMALS

BECOME ENDAMIC

A species becomes endemic when it has

evolved in such a manner that it can only
survive in a specific region or place.
This species however is highly adapted
to it's specific environment. For additional
information on endemic species.
