Croc Finder
Imagine holding a T. Rex. Thats how society herpetologist Brady Barr says he felt when he held a
juvenile Siamese crocodile the first capture reported by scientists in nearly a century in
Cambodias Cardamom Mountains last year. Surveying the mountains with the help of Society
Expeditions Council grant, biologist Jennifer Daltry of Fauna and Flora International, and Cambodian
Wildlife protection officer Dany Cheang, spotted some of the crocs in 2000. Since then Jennifer has
turned up more than 100 Crocodylus siamensis, whose numbers have shrunk due to hunting and
habitat loss. Her team sampled the critically endangered crocs DNA in search of genetic markers
that might help distinguish pure and hybrid crocs in captivity. Pure crocs may be released elsewhere
in the wild in a repopulation effort.
