What is a wing?

The wing is the essential lift

generator, and that is why it is the most
important part of an airplane.

The structure of a wing

The conventional
wing consists of
Longitudinal
structural
members

Transversal
structural
members

The longitudinal structural members

are reprezented by:
SPARS
STRINGERS

The transversal structural members are

reprezented by:
RIBS
SKIN

A wing spar is a beam with the upper and lower flanges

interconnected into a web or a drug struts. The spar vertically
transmits the shearing forces to the wing attachments point and
receives a bending moment applied to the flanges.
Stringers are attached to the wing upper and lower skin to make
it stiff and enable it to withstand stresses exerted by vertical
forces.
Ribs are the basic members used to give the wing section its
aerodynamic shape. It is directly to the ribs and via the stringers
that the skin is attached. The ribs take the air load and transmit it
to the spar.On the whole the wing members form a thin-walledclosed structure consisting of the framework and the skin working
side by side.
The skins role is to ensure the required strength and rigidity. That
is the main reason why the skin, emphenage and the fuselage
should be thickened and other members of the airplane structure
strengthened. To prevent the wing skin from loosing its stability in
the gap between ribs it is strengthened by longitudinal membersstringers. With this object in view, the honeycomb construction
and other structures are employed.

The ailerons role is to control the aeroplane movement

around the longitudinal axis and the high lift
devices, movable leading edge, slats and trailing edge flaps
and the boundary layer blow-off or suction gear.
The leading edge slats are essentially small movable
auxiliary airfoils attached to the leading edge of a
wing, which, when closed, fall within the original contour of
the wing,and ,when opened,form a slot.The air,passing
through this slot, flows over the upper surface of the
wing, thus blowing off the boundary layer. The slats have
been usually used only for enhancing the aeroplane lateral
stability when flying at high angles of attack. There exist two
types of slats: fixed or movable.
The flaps are located on the trailing edge. These high lift
devices allow one to enhance the lift coefficient without
increasing the attack angle. The simpliest type is a split flap
which is actually a part of the lower surface of the
airfoil.Another type of flap is the extension flap. This is
structurally more complicated than the split flap.

Classification

Acording to sets of wing ,aircrafts are

of three types:
Monoplane
Biplane
Triplane

AA monoplane is
a fixed wing
aircraft of one
main set of wing
surface.

A biplane is a
fixed wing
aircraft with two
wings stacked
one above the
other.

A triplane is
fixed wing
aircraft
equipped with
three vertical
stacked wing
surfaces.

According to the position of the wing

there are also three types:
Low wing
Mid wing
High wing

Passenger Aircraft Boeing

767

Military aircraft Hawker Sea

Hawk FGA6

Cargo aircraft Lockheed Martin

C130-J Hercule

Conclusion

A general conclusion would be the wing

is just a streamlined structure attached
to the fuselage of the aircraft, BUT in
my opinion is more than that
