Heritage
Over the years the temple has blossomed
into a religious landmark in the street
harmony of Johor Bahru to become a
tourist attraction.
In the street of Ungku Puan, the temple
has created a row of Indian flowers shops
with the concept of Little India.
Was first founded by Mr Kootha Perumal
Vandayar who wanted a place for worship
for the hindus of Johor Bahru.

About the Temple

The Arulmigu Rajamariamman Temple was
founded by Mr Kootha Perumal Vandayar
who wanted a place to worship for the
Hindus of Johor Bahru. As a community
leader he approached the Sultan for a
piece of land to build a Hindu Temple. His
Royal Highness Sultan of Johor, Sir Sultan
Ibrahim Ibni Sultan Abu Bakar gave an
acre of land and RM500 to the founder on
22 Mac 1911 to build a temple at Jalan
Ungku Puan, Johor Bahru. In honour of His
Royal Highness generous donation, the

The first Perum Santhi Vizha took place on

8.12.1911 and from then onwards the
temple started to grow. The second Perum
Santhi Vizha took place in the year 1935
after some changes were done to the
temple.
In 1949, the temple was registered under
the Society Ordinance as Rajamariamman
Kovil. Between 1950-56, the temple was
managed by by two committees, one for
temple affairs and the other for Hindu
religious affairs.

The two committees were amalgamated

into a Single Rajamariamman Temple
Committee in 1956. During the same
period, Iyer was appointed replacing
pandarams to perform pooja and
weddings. A brick wall surrounding the
temple was also built in the same year.

What we have learned

What we have learned after visiting this
temple are, we are able to understand the
meaning of the design and architecture for
the temple.
As example, the statues are arranged from
top to bottom of the temples roof which
shows that the higher the statues are the
holy their status are according to the Hindus.
Other than that, we can see that many
statues of their God have many hands which
shows that they can do more things that any
human can do.

Unfortunately, we were unable to enter the

temple as the praying hour was at 3.30 pm
and we were there a little bit early.
From the information that we got from the
guardian of the temple, this temple also
provide a wedding hall. We would like to
see how the wedding hall look like but we
were not allowed to because the temple
was not yet open.
In addition, before entering the temple, we
must take off our shoes because the temple
is a sacred place and we must respect that.
