• Web-based Learning = Online Learning = Internet-

based learning.

• Online learning constitutes just one part of

technology-based learning and describes learning
via Internet, intranet, and extranet.

online mentoring, links to material on a corporate
intranet or the Web, and communications with
corporate education records.

• WWW: The web is set up to handle two
way communication. : e-mail forms,
take quizzes, or vote. It is also possible
to set up bulletin boards, chat rooms,
calendars or keep track of where users
have been.
• Problems : standards, platform issues,
and browser incompatibilities ….

Introduction to IRC

 IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a multi-

user, multi-channel chatting system.
 Imagine sitting in front of your
computer and "talking" through
typed messages with either one
person or many other people from all
over the Internet, all in real time!

: Introduction to IRC

 IRC is based on a client-server model.

 You run a client program on your own
computer which connects you to a server
computer on the Internet.
 These servers link to many other servers to
make up an IRC network, which transport
messages from one user (client) to
another.
 In this manner, people from all over the
world can talk to each other live and
simultaneously.

Web Based Learning

: Introduction to IRC

 Once you are set up with a provider and a

client, you are in control.
 Choose a nickname you wish to be known by,
then connect to one of the many different
IRC networks catering to different geographical
locations, interests, or philosophies.

Web Based Learning

: Introduction to IRC

 The largest networks have tens of thousands of

people online at any given moment, drawn from
an order of magnitude or more of regular
visitors.
 These people create thousands of channels
(sometimes incorrectly called "chat rooms")
where people may meet and mingle.
 You may join these channels and participate in
the group discussion, or you may elect to chat
privately with individuals.

: What Are Mailing Lists?

 A mailing list is basically a group of people

who share a common interest (usually this is
a large group).
 The members send messages to the mailing
list, that relate to the common interest, and
these messages are then distributed to
everyone on the the list.
 A variation is to have a mailing list that is out-
going only. Companies use this type to send
their customers newsletters and update
information.

: LISTSERV

 An automatic mailing list server developed by Eric

Thomas for BITNET in 1986. When e-mail is
addressed to a LISTSERV mailing list, it is
automatically broadcast to everyone on the list.
The result is similar to a newsgroup or forum,
except that the messages are transmitted as e-
mail and are therefore available only to
individuals on the list.
 Although LISTSERV refers to a specific mailing
list server, the term is sometimes used incorrectly
to refer to any mailing list server. Another popular
mailing list server is Majordomo, which is
freeware.

: What Are Bulletin Boards?

 An electronic message center. Most

bulletin boards serve specific interest
groups. They allow you to, review
messages left by others, and leave
your own message if you want.

: VoIP?

• Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is a technology

that allows you to make voice calls using a
broadband Internet connection instead of a regular
(or analog) phone line. Some VoIP services may
only allow you to call other people using the same
service, but others may allow you to call anyone
who has a telephone number - including local, long
distance, mobile, and international numbers. Also,
while some VoIP services only work over your
computer or a special VoIP phone, other services
allow you to use a traditional phone connected to
a VoIP adapter.

VoIP?

 VoIP (voice over IP - that is, voice delivered

using the Internet Protocol) is a term used in
IP telephony for a set of facilities for managing
the delivery of voice information using the
Internet Protocol (IP).

 In general, this means sending voice

information in digital form in discrete packets
rather than in the traditional circuit-committed
protocols of the public switched telephone
network (PSTN)

VoIP?

 Telephone companies offload voice calls

from public switched telephone
networks (PSTNs) to voice-over-Internet
Protocol (VoIP) networks because it is
cheaper to carry voice traffic over Internet
Protocol (IP) networks than over switched
circuit networks.

VoIP?

 In the future, IP telephony networks are

expected to enable innovative new
multimedia services while working
seamlessly with legacy telephone networks.
 A VoIP network carries voice traffic cheaper
than a switched circuit telephone network
because IP telephony networks make
better use of available bandwidth.

: VoIP?

 In a public switched telephone network, for

example, a dedicated 64 kilobits per second (kbps)
end-to-end circuit is allocated for each call.
 In a VoIP network, digitized voice data is highly
compressed and carried in packets over IP
networks.
 Using the same bandwidth, a VoIP network can
carry many times the number of voice calls as a
switched circuit network with better voice quality.
 The savings realized in using VoIP networks are
often passed onto users in the form of lower costs.
