BROADBAND APPLICATIONS

Video On Demand (VOD)

Allows subscribers to watch any pre-loaded program at anytime
with full DVD like controls
Broadcast (BTV) & Time-shifted TV (TVOD)
Besides regular BTV services, TVoDSL provides subscribers with
virtual DVD controls to pause, start, stop, rewind and fast forward
live TV programs
Users also have the flexibility to watch any previous broadcasted
programs without pre-recording (nPVR)
Pay-Per-View (PPV) /near-Video on Demand (nVOD)
Programs broadcast according to a pre-set schedule with
subscribers having the option of watching and paying for individual
programs

Interactive TV (iTV)

BROADBAND ACCESS
TYPES
Broadband communications technology
can be divided broadly into wireline and
wireless technologies.
Wireline technologies include traditional
telephone lines, coaxial cable lines, and
fiber optic lines.
Wireless communications involve cellular
and fixed wireless technology, high speed
short range communications and satellite
transmission.

Advantages and Disadvantages of ADSL

Advantages
Always on
No usage charge
Inexpensive
Fast
No engineer install
Easy to set up
Wider coverage as
almost every house has
a copper pair!
Can use telephone at
the same time as being
online
Minimum 3 month
contract with some
providers
Wide choice of
products within the
ADSL portfolio
Easy to migrate

Apr 4, 2015

Disadvantages
Must have a
BSNLtelephone line to
use ADSL (At the
moment!)
Not suitable for
servers
Contention issues
Distance limits
Local exchange must
be ADSL enabled
DACS can cause
problems
Alarms that contact
authorities via phone
line can be
problematic with an
ADSL installation

14

Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) on

copper loop
DSL has proved to be an important
technology for provisioning of Broadband
services through the copper loop. The
owners of copper loop have to be given a
high priority because their role is critical as
key drivers in the Broadband service market
using DSL.
BSNL and MTNL as well as other access
providers are expected to aggressively use
their copper loop infrastructure for providing
Broadband services through this technology

DSLAM
A digital subscriber line access multiplexer
(DSLAM) delivers exceptionally high-speed data
transmission over existing copper telephone
lines
A DSLAM separates the voice-frequency signals
from the high-speed data traffic and controls and
routes digital subscriber line (xDSL) traffic
between the subscriber's end-user equipment
(router, modem, or network interface card [NIC])
and the network service provider's network

Apr 4, 2015

22

DSLAM
A DSLAM takes connections from many
customers and aggregates them onto a single,
high-capacity connection to the Internet
DSLAMs are generally flexible and able to
support multiple types of DSL in a single central
office, and different varieties of protocol and
modulation -- both CAP and DMT, for example -in the same type of DSL
The DSLAM may provide additional functions
including routing or dynamic IP address
assignment for the customers.
Apr 4, 2015

23

DSLAM
DSLAM is an integrated hardware
and software system that allows
the user to access Broadband
services as well as originate and
terminate telephone calls over the
same single pair of copper wires

Apr 4, 2015

24

DSLAM
DSLAM aggregates the subscriber lines
DSLAM separates Voice and Data of the
Subscriber
Voice is given to the exchange switch
Data is fed to the IP Network through the
LAN Switch
DSLAMs have been categorized in to 6
types based on no. of ports (480, 240,120,
64, 48 & 24) provided and planned for
deployment based on the expected

CONCLUSION
The introduction of broadband technologies,
including but not limited to DSL, cable, fiber,
satellite, and fixed and mobile wireless.
Has enabled traditional and new forms of

47

CONCLUSION

One fact that holds true globally is that

broadband technologies enable many
applications that provide enormous social
and economic benefits to citizens
Bandwidth requirements for emerging
