Introduction:
o It forms the life line of the country by creating to its
needs for large scale movement of freight as well as
passengers traffics.
o It not only contributes its economic growth but also
promotes national integration.
o It provides an important mode of transportation in
farthest corners of the country.
o Its headquarters lies in Lahore
o Administered by federal government under the ministry
of railways.

VISION STATEMENT:
To achieve excellence in Engineering Services with
special emphasis on Railway Sector and to
become an international commercial company
operating beyond Pakistans borders

MISSION STATEMENT:
To lead the public and private sector in the
engineering disciplines including Railways by
providing highest quality and safety standards
in an economical and efficient manner

History:
o It provides important mode of transportation
throughout Pakistan.
o First time idea was given in 1847 with the possibility of
Karachi becoming a major seaport.
o On 13 may1861 the first railway line was opened to the
public between Karachi and kotri with total length of
169kms
o On 24 april1865 railway line was opened in Lahoremultan about 336kms long.

o Slowly and gradually it spreads through out the world.

o Dysfunctional railway system
o Negligence by last govt has led the pakistan
railways down rapidly
o In 2011 PR networks cancelled many trains and
AC service were stopped due to shortage of fuel

working condition
o The remaining 380 trains have developed major faults
o Pakistan Railways had purchased 150 new locomotives
from China for Rs8 billion about six years back, but they
proved to be substandard.

Demoralization: Demoralization is not only adversely
affecting the efficiency and effectiveness of service
delivery but is also forcing the most efficient and
essential to leave the service.
Disrespectful Attitude: disrespectful attitudes of the
employees towards the passengers threatens the
profitable and strong relationship with passengers.
Outright Fleecing: Corrupt employees of Railway
along with policemen deal with customers without

Unnecessary secrecy: when the trains are late,
employees create the suspense and they do not inform
the passengers correctly about the timing of train.
Irresponsible Behavior: Most of the employees prove
themselves not responsible for any issue regarding
train. They dont even say sorry for the inconvenience.
Lazy Ticket Checkers: They do not perform their duty
very well and just fulfill the formality.

Process
Lack of computerized system: Passengers have to
purchase the ticket manually and sometimes they wait in
the rows to purchase the ticket.
lack of punctuality: Trains are too late most of the times.
Passengers have to wait for 5 to 10 hours sometimes.
Security issues: Anyone apart from his identification can
easily enter in the train due to lack of effective security.
Passengers might be threatened by terrorists.

Process
Lack of facilities:
-Lack of Lights in the train,
-perished food items are being sold at the platform,
-less waiting rooms, no cleanliness at platform as well
as in the train.
No Accountability: No check and balance of:
-Seats allotment
-Smoking,
- Having pan and ghutka etc.

Pakistan Railway established the Directorate


of Marketing which works directly under the
guidance of the Ministry of Railways
The objectives of this Directorate are, through publicprivate participation, to conceive, plan, finance and
manage commercial projects which shall generate
additional revenue.

The Directorate compromises of a team


headed by the Director Marketing with:
Four Deputy Directors
Four Assistant Directors.
The Directorate is based at Lahore with branch operations
in Karachi, Multan and Islamabad.

The Directorate is divided into following


functional areas,

1. Advertising Department
2. New Business Development

Advertisement
for promotion of different rail services
Advertisement through print media
Advertisement through electronic media

News of any important event is prepared and released
to media offices through email and fax formats .

New Business Development


This department is responsible for conceiving, planning,
financing and managing high value real estate projects
through public-private participation through out
Pakistan.
Some of the institutions which have been
commercialized by this department include Railways
hospitals, schools, clubs and sports stadiums etc.
