Plot

 a plot is an account of the action and all of the motivations


lying behind the action in a literary work. A plot may
include such elements as the "exposition," where the
setting is established, the characteristic are introduced,
and background information is provided

Setting
 A place or type of surrounding

 And the river was pink and the ground was green
Point-of-View
 A way a person see’s certain things from their perspective

 “and Bob did not agree with Jim’s view of the object”
Characterization
 The method a writer uses to make or describe certain
characters

 “the writer was creative with his characterization”


Theme
 The main subject of the literature

 “the theme of the park was beautiful”


Alliteration
 the repetition of the same sound in a phrase or sentence

 “the poem showed a lot of alliteration”


Allusion
 An indirect or passing reference

 “the man passed with an allusion”


Analogy
 A comparison between two words

 “and the tree looked very similar to the broccoli”


Antagonist
 A person who actively opposes someone or something

 “the townspeople were very antagonistic toward the


king’s decree”
Aside
 An actor’s speech directed to an audience

 “the man said, I will put my airplane in your hangar”


Blank Verse
 A verse without any rhythm or rhyme

 “there was a blank verse in the poem”


Climax
 The most interesting or intense part of a story

 “the climax in the story was fabulous”


Comic Relief
 A comedic scene in a film story

“the comic relief concert was hilarious”


Conflict
A disagreement between two or more people. A conflict can
be with one’s self

“there was a man who had a conflict with his wife”


Couplet
 Two lines a script or verse

 “the couplet was amazing”


Diction
 The meaning or origin of a word

“the word had no diction”


Dramatic Irony
 Irony that is dramatic in a story

 “the man punched the little girl and the girl fought back”
Dramatic Structure
 In a story, a dramatic part in a story that keeps the reader
intrigued

 “the book had the people sitting on the edge their seats”
Epithet
 The quality characteristic of a person

 “the old woman had a great personality”


Figurative Language
 A system for analyzing languages

 “the man was very sophisticated”


Foreshadowing
 An indication of a future event

 “the boy anticipated his friend falling on the ground ”


Foil
 To prevent from succeeding

 “Robin Hood had to foil the villain’s plan”


Imaginary
 A Visually descriptive example

 “the boy was sad that flat Stanley was fake”


Irony
 An event that seems deliberately contrary to what one
expects

 “everything in the boy’s life was ironic”


Meter
 The basic rhythmic structure of a verse

 “There were many meters in the poem”


Metaphor
 A figure of speech in which a word represents an object

 “kill two birds with one stone”


Oxymoron
 A figure of speech in which apparently contrary terms
appear in a conjunction

 “that was as cold as fire”


Personification
 The attribute of a personal nature

 “that man was very kind”


Protagonist
 A leading character

 “the boy was the main character”


Pun
 A joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a
word

 “I play all chords, bar one”


Rhyme Scheme
 The ordered pattern of rhymes

 “don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time”


Simile
 A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing
with another thing of a different nature

 “that cat looks like a dog”


Situational Irony
 Irony that is felt in a certain situation

 “it was ironic when the piano fell from the sky”
Soliloquy
 Speaking one’s thoughts regardless of anyone who hears

 “that guy next to me smells weird”


Sonnet
 A poem of fourteen lines

 “did you read my sonnet”


Symbol
 A word, object, or certain line pattern that represents a
certain title

 “that symbol looks cool”


Tragedy
 A sad event that occurs within the contexts of the
literature

 “my grandpa got hit by a bulldozer”


Verbal Irony
 Irony shown in a certain tone of voice

 “his voice sounded weird last night”
