WHAT IS SYNERGY?
It is the highest activity in all life the true test and

manifestation of all the other habits put together.


It focus the four unique human endowments, motive of
win/win, and the skills of emphatic communication. Thus,
creating new alternatives something that was not there
before.
It is the essence of a principle-centered leadership.

What is Synergy?
The whole is greater than
the sum of its parts.
1 + 1 = 3 or more, not 2.

ESSENCE OF SYNERGY
The very way a man and a woman bring a child into the

world is synergistic. The essence of synergy is to value


differences to respect them, to build on strengths, to
compensate for weaknesses.

SYNERGISTIC COMMUNICATION VS HABIT 2


It would show that the principle is an opposite of Habit 2

since it looks like it deviates the person from looking at the


end.
However, synergistic communication is in fact the
fulfillment of the Habit 2.
There is no assurance how synergistic communication will
work out but it gives and inward excitement, security and
adventure, believing that significant is going to happen
than before. --- This is the new end that you now have in
mind.
It creates a momentum towards more insights, learning,
and growth.

HOW DO I APPLY SYNERGY?


FACT:
Most people do not really
have the experienced even
the moderate kind of
synergy in their family life or
in other interaction.
Theyve been trained and
scripted into defensive and
protective communications
or believing that some
people cannot be trusted.

SOLUTION:
Synergy can be produced
regularly, consistently, daily
in people lives. But it
requires personal security,
openness, and spirit of
adventure. (Habit 5)

ROLE OF SYNERGY:
Synergy tests whether teacher and students are really

open to the principle of the whole being greater than the


sum of its parts.
It is normal where the teacher or the student neither
knows whats going to happen by the end of the semester.
At first, theres that safe environment where people are
allowed to be open and learn and listen to each others
idea.
Then, brainstorming, where spirit of evaluation is
subordinated to the spirit of creativity, imagining, and
intellectual networking.

ROLE OF SYNERGY:
Then, it transforms the whole group because the

excitement of a new thrust, a new idea, a new direction


that is hard to define, yet its palpable to the people
involved.
Synergy is almost as if the group agrees to subordinate
the old script and to write a new one.

CUTTING OFF FROM SYNERGY


There are times when most are synergistic, times that
hung on the edge of chaos and for some reason
descended to it. Sadly, people who are burned by such
experiences often begin their new experience with that
failure in mind. They defend themselves against it and cut
themselves off from synergy.
Example: Its like administrators who set up new rules and
regulations based on the abuses of a few people inside an
organization, thus limiting the freedom and creative
possibilities for many. It kills the whole spirit of creativity,
enterprise, and synergistic possibility.

The more authentic you become, the more genuine is
your expression, particularly regarding personal
experiences and even self doubts, the more people can
relate to your expression, the safer it makes them feel to
express themselves.

The creation of synergy will greatly influence excitement

instead of boredom. People become very open to each


others influence and generated new insights and options.
A new understanding of the goal or challenge evolves.
Difference were valued and transcended. A new vision
began to form.

THE REAL SYNERGY


Once people experienced real synergy. They are never

quite the same again. They know the possibility of having


other such mind-expanding adventures in the future.
There is no exactly the same kind of experience of
synergy but the essential purpose behind creative work
can be recaptured.
Far Eastern Philosophy says: We seek not to imitate the

masters, rather we seek what they sought, we seek not


to imitate past creative synergistic experience, rather we
seek new ones around new and different and sometimes,
higher purpose.

SYNERGY AND COMMUNICATION

SYNERGY AND COMMUNICATION


Synergy is exciting. Creativity is exciting. Its phenomenal

what openness and communication can produce. The


possibilities of truly significant gain, of significant
improvement are so real that its worth the risk such
openness entails.

SYNERGY AND COMMUNICATION

Lowest level of communication comes out of low-trust


communication which will be characterized as defensiveness,
protectiveness, and often legalistic language, which makes the
even go sour.

SYNERGY AND COMMUNICATION

Middle communication is respectful communication. This the


level where fairly mature people interact. They have respect for
each other but avoid the possibility of confrontation. They
understand each other intellectually but not emotionally.

SYNERGY AND COMMUNICATION

Synergy means that 1 + 1 may equal to 8, 16 or 1,600. The


synergistic position of high trust produces solutions better than
any originally proposed, and all parties know it. Even if it is short
lived, the P/PC balance is there.

Compromise vs. Synergy


Compromise creates insensitivity, neglect, or a bad

priority decision on either part. It could be a source of


contention for years and could even polarize the family.
Synergy creates communication between two parties until

they come up with a solution that both feel good about it.
Solutions that are better than either of them originally
planned.

NEGATIVE SYNERGY

Highly dependent people

are borrowing strength


from position power and
they go for Win/Lose or
theyre dependent on
being popular with others
and they go for
Lose/Win. They may talk
Win/Win but they dont
really want to listen; they
only want to manipulate.

Insecure people think that

all reality should be


amenable to their
paradigms. They have the
high need to clone others,
to mold them over their own
thinking. They dont realize
that the very strength of
relationship is in having
another point of view.
Sameness is not oneness,
Uniformity is not unity. It is
uncreative.

SYNERGY
The essence of synergy is to value the differences.
The key to interpersonal synergy is intrapersonal synergy,

that is synergy within ourselves.


The heart of intrapersonal synergy is embodied in the first
three habits which gives the internal security sufficient to
handle the risks of being open and vulnerable.
By internalizing those principles, we develop the
abundance mentality of Win/Win and the authenticity of
Habit 5 (Seek first to understand, then to be understood).
Being principle-centered makes us whole truly
integrated.

VALUING DIFFERENCES

VALUING DIFFERENCES
This is the essence of synergy the mental, emotional

and the psychological differences between people. And


the key to valuing those differences is to realize that all
people see the world, not as it is, but as they are.

The Animal School


Once upon a time, the animals decided they must do
something heroic to meet the problems of a New World, so
they organized a school. They adopted an activity curriculum
consisting of running, climbing, swimming, and flying. To make
it easier to administer, all animals took all the subjects.
The duck was excellent in swimming, better in fact than his
instructor, and made excellent grades in flying, but he was
very poor in running. Since he was low in running he had to
stay after school and also drop swimming to practice running.
This was kept up until his web feet were badly worn and he
was only average in swimming. But average was acceptable
in school, so nobody worried about that except the duck.

The Animal School


The rabbit started at the top of the class running, but
had a nervous breakdown because of so much make up in
swimming.
The squirrel was excellent in climbing until he
developed frustrations in flying class where his teacher
made him starts from the ground up instead of from the
tree-top down. He also develop charley horses from over
exertions and got a C in climbing and D in running.
The eagle was a problem child and had to be
disciplined severely. In climbing class, he beat all the others
to the top of the tree, but insisted on using his own way of
getting there.

The Animal School


At the end of the year, an abnormal eel that would
swim exceedingly well and also could run, climb, and fly
a little had the highest average and was the valedictorian.
The prairie dogs stayed out of school and fought the
tax levy because the administration would not add
digging and burrowing to the curriculum. They
apprenticed their children to the badger and later joined
the groundhogs and gophers to start a successful private
school.

FORCE FIELD ANALYSIS

Sociologist Kurt Lewin developed a Force Field Analysis

which is any current level of performance or being as a


state of equilibrium between the driving forces that
encourage upward movement and the restraining forces
that discourages it.
Synergy balances the driving and restraining forces.

How? By using the motive of Habit 4, the skill of Habit 5


and the interaction of Habit 6.

ALL NATURE IS SYNERGY

ECOLOGY
It is a word that describes the synergism in nature

everything is related to everything else. It is in the


relationship that creative powers are maximized, just as
the real power in these Seven Habits is in their
relationship to each other, not just the individual habits
themselves.
The more genuine the involvement, the more sincere and

sustained the participation in analyzing and solving the


problems, the greater the release of everyones creativity,
and of their commitment to what they create.

Although you cannot control the paradigms of others in an

interdependent interaction or synergistic process itself, a


great deal of synergy is within your Circle of Influence.
Your own internal energy is completely within the circle. You
respect both sides of your own nature the analytical and
creative side. You value the difference between them and
use that difference to catalyze creativity.
You can be synergistic within yourself even in the midst of a
very adversarial environment. You dont have to take insults
personally. You can sidestep negative energy; you can look
for the good in others and utilize that good, as different as it
may be, to improve your point of view and enlarge your
perspective.

Exercise the courage in interdependent situations by

being open, expressing your ideas, feelings and


experiences in such a way that will encourage other
people to open up also.
Theres always a synergistic third alternative when you

are left with two alternatives yours and the wrong one.
If you really want to work with a Win/Win philosophy and
really seek to understand, you can always find a solution
that will be better for anyone concerned.
