ATTITUDES

What is Attitude ?
It is a fixed way of thinking as per Oxford
Dictionary.
It is an evaluative statement concerning an object,
people and event.
It reflects how an individual feels about something.
It may be defined as an enduring organization of
motivational,
emotional,
perceptual
and
cognitive process with respect some aspect in
an individuals world.

What is Attitude ?
It is a process which exists in an individual even
thou it cannot be seen directly.
It is an intangible vector quantity, a unidimensional variable either positive or
negative, involving emotional reactions, beliefs
and actions.
The emotional components develop as a
consequence
of
conditional
response,
associated with stimuli, resulting either
rewarding or punishing effects.

What is Attitude ?
The cognitive component of a social attitude
includes individuals perceptions, beliefs,
ideas and knowledge about the object,
people or event.
The most critical cognitions induced into the
attitude are evaluative beliefs, involving
attribution of favorable or unfavorable,
good or bad qualities of the object, people
or event.

What is Attitude ?
The term opinion is some time used as a
substitute for cognitive component of an
attitude, especially when it is related with some
issue.
The behavioral components of attitude consists
of the tendency to act or react to an object /
people / event in certain ways.
This action orientation is seen / measured by
observing what the individual does in a given
situation.

Components of Attitude
There are three basic components of attitude
Cognitive or Information component
Affective or emotional component
Behavioral component
Cognitive or Information component :
It
consists of beliefs and values, ideas and
other information that a person has about
the object learned from a reasonably reliable
resource.

Affective or emotional component :
It
involves the persons feelings of likes and
dislikes towards the object.
Behavioral component : It is a tendency of a
person to behave in a particular manner
towards the object.
It shows that an attitude can be considered
as a way of thinking, feeling and behaving.

Behavior
There is a tentative link between attitude and
behavior.
Beliefs and values create attitude that predisposes
ones behavior.
Attitude leads to the intended behavior, which may
or may not be displayed in any given
circumstances.
Even though attitudes do not always predict
behavior, the link between attitude and intended
behavior cannot be ignored.

Behavior
When someone expresses concern about the
bad attitude it is associated with some
reason
i,.e..,
displeasure
with
the
behavioral consequences with which the
bad attitude is associated.
In an organizational situation, unfavorable
attitude of workers may result in labor
unrest, absenteeism, low productivity etc.
