What is Disaster
A disaster whether natural or humaninduced, is an event which results in
widespread
human loss. It is
accompanied by loss of livelihood,
property causing suffering and loss in a
definite area.

Types Of Disaster
There

are two types of disaster:-

1) Natural Disaster
2) Human-made Disaster

Natural Disaster
A natural disaster is an event that is
caused by a natural hazard and leads to
human,
material,
economic
and
environmental losses. Which exceed the
ability of those affected to cope.
Some of example of natural disasters
are the 2004 Indian ocean tsunami, the
2008 earthquake in china, the 2007
cyclone in Myanmar.

Human-made Disaster
A serious disruption of normal life
triggered by a human-induced hazard
causing human, material, economic and
environmental losses, which exceed the
ability of those affected to cope.
Some examples are the 1984 Bhopal
gas tragedy, the 1997 Uphaar cinema
fire in Delhi, jaipur serial blasts in 2008.

What is a Disaster Management


Disaster management can be defined as
the organization and management of
resources and responsibilities for dealing
with all humanitarian aspects of
emergencies in particular preparedness,
response & recovery in to lessen the
impact of disaster.

Phases Of Disaster Management


There

are different phases of disaster


management :-

Response and Relief


Rehabilitation and Reconstruction
Mitigation
Preparedness

Response and Relief

Immediate measures taken up in


anticipation of,during and immediately
after a disaster to ensure that the
effects are minimized.

Rehabilitation and Reconstruction


The

operations and decision taken after


a disaster with a view to restore an
affected community to its former living
conditions
,while
encourage
and
facilitating the necessary adjustments
to the changes caused by the disaster.

Mitigation
Any

action take to minimize the extent of


a disaster, but the term is most often
used to refer to actions against potential
disasters. Mitigation measures are both
physical and structural, such as flood
defenses or strengthening buildings as
well as non-structural, such as training is
disaster management, regulating landuse and public education, among others.

Preparedness

It involves measures to ensure that


communities and services are capable of
coping with theeffect ofdisaster.

Aims of Disaster Management


1)

Reduces (avoid, if possible) the


potential losses of hazards.

2)

Assure prompt and appropriate assistance to


victims when necessary.

3)

Achieve rapid and durable recovery.
