Chapter - 1
Introduction
Facts
Basics of power transmission networks
Control of power flow in AC
transmission line

What is FACTS?
FACTS means flexible AC
transmission line.
Flexible AC Transmission System
(FACTS) is defined as `Alternating
current transmission systems
incorporating power electronic-based
and other static controllers to
enhance controllability and increase
power transfer capability.

FACTS CONTROLLERS

General description
Voltage source converter based controllers
A general equivalent circuit for FACTS
controllers
Benefits with the application of FACTS
controllers

General description
The FACTS controller is defined as a power
electronic based system and other static
equipment that provide control of one or
more AC transmission system parameters.
The FACTS controllers can be classified as
1. Shunt connected controllers
2. Series connected controllers
3. Combined series-series controllers
4. Combined shunt-series controllers

Benefits with the application of

FACTS Controllers
Reduces power losses.
Improves voltage profile.
The transient stability limit is
increased.
Both voltage and power flow are
controlled by the combined series
and shunt controllers(UPFC).

SHUNT COMPENSATION

Shunt compensation is of two types
Transmission line model

Types of shunt
compensation
Shunt Compensation is of two
types
Shunt capacitive compensation:
This method is used to improve the
power factor.
Shunt inductive compensation:
This method is used either when
charging the transmission line (or)
when there is very low load at the
receiving end.

CONCLUSION
This paper investigates the effect of series
compensation on the optimal location of a
shunt FACTS device to get the highest possible
benefit of maximum power transfer and system
stability. The deviation in the optimal location
of the shunt FACT device from the center point
of line depends upon the degree of series
compensation and it increases almost linearly
from the center point of the transmission line
towards the generator side as the degree of
series compensation (%S) is increased.
