Introduction
DSS-SMPA as an
information system to
support decision making
Colombia has 26 marine protected areas
(MPA) that cover close to 8% of the
countrys marine and coastal zones.
Coastal and marine biodiversity is
currently subject to various forms of
direct pressure and degradation
Operative Modules
DSS-SMPA is composed by several modules.
The main are:
Operative Modules
General questions of Colombias SMPA
Filter tools questions combining five criteria:
1) MPA name, 2)MPA managing entity, 3) MPA
management level, 4) MPA geographic
location, 5) Category AP
Operative Modules
Designing MPA
This module includes tools for analyzing conservation targets (e.g.
ecosystems and species distribution), natural hazards impacting
biodiversity and, priority conservation proposed areas. This module also
offers tools for representativeness analysis, gap conservation analysis
and creation and viability assessment of new MPA

Additional services
The system provides additional services aimed
at accessing other important inputs for
decision-making. The most representative are:
Conclusion
The recent development of information
technology and the ease information access
have allowed offering to the users
applications based on graphs representation,
geographic distribution, spatial analysis and
integration of diverse data sources
The tools are now more intuitive, providing
greater information content and allowing
access to multiple sources of information
seamlessly to the user. These advantages
allow taking advantage of this type of
applications in the processes related to the
management and decision making.
