Drill-Ship
A vessel with a drilling rig & marine equipments
Self Propelled : Water depth 20m to 3500m
Floats during the drilling and other operations
Operates in deep and ultra-deep waters

Semi-Submersible Rig
Hull consists of vertical columns attached to the
horizontal pontoons.
Buoyancy from ballasted watertight pontoons
located below ocean surface.
While drilling, water filled lower-hull provide stability.
Used in water depth 30m to 3000 m.
Anchor moored and Dynamically positioned.

SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE RIGS
OMG,IDT
OMG,IDT
Semi-Sub : Dis-advantages
Prone to capsizing as CG keeps moving up
with addition of load on top deck during ops.
Semis: Costly operations/ Expensive to build
Less payload (Cargo) capacity than drill ships

OMG,IDT
Jack-Up : Advantages
Provides a fixed platform.
Initial cost comparatively less.
Can work in soft bottom areas.
Withstand hurricane type of storms better.
Can drill in water depth of about 300 feet.
Operating rents lower than floater, but high
end Jack-ups ; day-rates higher.
OMG,IDT
Jack-Up : Disadvantages
Difficult and risky to tow.
Legs to be laid down for long moves.
Too many moving parts in jacking system
Water depth limitation.
OMG,IDT
J-up : Independent-leg
Spud can at the bottom of leg.
Spud can exert 3500-5000 lbs/ft2 bearing load.
Each leg can be lowered independently.
Each leg may have different penetration.
Can operate in firm & uneven bottoms.
Preloading done for Stability and Safety
OMG,IDT
OMG,IDT
OMG,IDT
OMG,IDT
Advantages: Mat-Rig
Can operate in water-depths: 4-7m / 75-125m.
Mat footings exert less bearing pressure on soil
than Spud-Can due to larger contact at sea floor
Beneficial where soil cannot support high bearing
loads.
OMG,IDT
Disadvantages: Mat-Rig
Not useable on uneven sea-beds/large slopes.
On bottoms with obstructions - Pipelines/debris
Have more drag while under tow.
Towing speed is less (Half).

Marine Equipments
Equipment / Systems not related to the Mission
Equipment (i.e. Drilling Equipment).
Similar to any sea vessel, regardless of its form
or function such as D/Engines, Electricalequipments, Communication-equipments - Radar,
safety equipments - Lifeboats etc.
Necessary for supporting
personnel
equipments involved in Mission.
