INTRODUCTION
Earthquake,trembling or shaking movement
of the earth's surface. Most earthquakes are
minor tremors. Larger earthquakes usually
begin with slight tremors but rapidly take the
form of one or more violent shocks, and end in
vibrations of gradually diminishing force called
aftershocks. The subterranean point of origin
of an earthquake is called its focus; the point
on the surface directly above the focus is the
epicenter. The magnitude and intensity of an
earthquake is determined by the use of scales,
e.g., the moment magnitude scale,
Richter scale, and the modified Mercalli scale.

What is an Earthquake ?
An earthquake is a shaking of the ground caused by the sudden
breaking and movement of large sections (tectonic plates) of the
earth's rocky outermost crust. The edges of the tectonic plates are
marked by faults (or fractures). Most earthquakes occur along the
fault lines when the plates slide past each other or collide against
each other.

Earthquake in Nepal

The2015 Nepal earthquake, also called the Gorkha earthquakeand

Nepal Greater Earthquake occurred at11:56 NSTon 25 April, killing at
least 6,700 people and injuring more than twice as many as of 1 May
2015,with amoment magnitudeof 7.8Mor 8.1M
and a
maximumMercalli
Intensityof IX (Violent).
Its epicenterlay in
Barpakvillage ofGorkha districtand itshypocenterwas at a depth of
approximately 15km (9.3mi).It was the most powerful disaster to strike
Nepal since the1934 NepalBihar earthquake . Some casualties have also
been reported in the adjoining areas ofIndia,China, and Bangladesh. The
earthquake triggeredan avalanche on Mount Everest, killing at least
19,making it the deadliest day on the mountain in history . It triggered
another huge avalanche in Langtang valley, where 250 are now missing .
Centuries-old buildings were destroyed at UNESCOWorld Heritage sitesin
theKathmandu Valley, including some at theKathmandu Durbar Square,
the
Patan
Durbar
Square
and
the
Bhaktapur
Durbar
Square.Continuedaftershocksoccurred throughout Nepal, with one shock
reaching a magnitude of 6.7 on 26 April at12:54:08NST . The country is
at continued risk of landslides as well.

CONCLUSION
We cannot stop earthquakes, but we can learn more, in hopes of discovering
ways to protect ourselves from them. There are a few ways we could help prevent
some damage of earthquakes in the future. Many buildings are constructed in
areas of earthquake risk. If a building is being constructed in a city that has
experienced earthquakes, new plans and building materials should be used to
strengthen the building. Recently, materials like this have been invented, such as
a combination of steel and rubber plates on buildings to absorb the shock of the
earthquake. Another easy safety thing for earthquakes is for the government of a
city to invest in a proper seismograph centre, and make sure there is always at
least one person monitoring it in case of an earthquake. Simple precautions are
the most effective way to minimize earthquake damage.
Stay away from windows and furniture that could potentially fall over. One of the
biggest hazards during an earthquake is falling debris and furniture. Avoid areas in
your house where you might be exposed to these hazards.Take cover in a safe
place in your house. Get under a sturdy table or desk to avoid being hit by
anything. If you can't take safe cover, protect your head and neck with your arms.
Do not try and go outside until after the shaking stops. If you are already indoors,
you are safer taking cover inside than attempting to leave your house during an
earthquake you could be hit by falling debris as you're trying to get out.
