Origin of the Frog

A long, long time ago, in a little village, there lived a
couple with a son. The mother was Aling Clara and the
father, Mang Pedro. The son, about seven years old was
Paulino.
Aling Clara and Mang Pedro owned a camote farm, the
biggest in the village. They were very hard-working farmers.
They woke up at the break of day to till the farm. Mang
Pedro worked the whole day. Aling Clara would come home
at the middle of the day to do house chores. She was a good
housekeeper and an excellent cook.

Origin of the Frog

There was a big problem, though, Paulino was a lazy boy. He was not only
lazy, he was also very greedy. He was always hungry, and whatever Aling Clara
cooked for the three of them, Paulino ate in one sitting.
You must talk to Paulino, Mang Pedro told his wife, one evening As
usual, we had very little to eat. He ate almost everything.
Aling Clara was tearful. I have always talked to him, Indo.
You are spoiling him!
Oh, please, Indo, do not say that! I am doing all I can so he would listen
to me, eat less and help you in the farm.
Mang Pedro had many dreams for Paulino. He thought of what a good
farmer Paulino would become, like him. He was the best farmer in the village,
harvesting the biggest and sweetest camotes. He thought of Paulino growing to
be a strong and handsome young man.

Origin of the Frog

But Paulino, being lazy, would sleep after eating. He did not even bother to help
him in the farm. He did not help Aling Clara in cleaning the house or taking the harvest
to market.
Inutil! Mang Pedro exclaimed.
He was very angry. He took the long, wooden rod used to hold the window when it
was left open. He quickly ran to the silid. As expected, he found Paulino fast asleep.
Paulino was lying on his side. Mang Pedro noticed how big and swollen his stomach
looked because of eating too much. In his anger, he began to whip Paulino.
Aray! Paulino woke up and cried because of pain.
Mang Paulino went on beating Paulino as the boy cried. Look at yourself! Mang
Pedro shouted. Your arms and legs are vey thin because you dont move. You just eat
and eat!
Aling Clara came to the rescue. Indo! What are you trying to do? Youll kill our
son! She took the rod from Mang Pedros hand. He moved away.

Origin of the Frog

Aling Clara sat on the floor and hugged Paulino who was shaking
with fear. She wiped his tears away, Stop crying my son!
Why does Itay hate me?
No Paulino.dont say that. He loves you as much as I do!
He whips meyou dont Inay!
Thats his way for you to remember what he tells you. He wants
you to grow up strong and useful! Aling Clara caressed Paulinos legs
that turned red with the lashing. Thats what we want you to be.
Look, it is only your stomach that gets bigger and bigger.
Aling Clara thought of ways so Paulino would not eat too much.
She did not make the food she cooked delicious. She thought it
would make Paulino stop eating much.

Origin of the Frog

But Aling Clara was wrong. Paulino would finish anything that could fill up his
stomach. It was Mang Pedro who went hungry, as she did, too.
One day, Mang Pedro brought home some good news to Aling Clara.
Kabesang Jaime wants you to cook for a banquet he is giving some guests from the
city.
Aling Claras eyes turned big with disbelief. You are joking, Indo!
No, Clara. Mang Pedro replied. Kabesang Jaime has heard of your cooking. He is
willing to pay you any amount you would ask, just so you cook for his visitors.
I cannot do that. Anything he gives me will be enough, Aling Clara said happily.
When Paulino learned of the banquet, he went with Aling Clara. At first, Aling Clara
would not take him along. But when he offered to help her carry a very big basket of
newly harvested camotes to be brought to Kabesang Jaime, Aling Clara gave in.
Promise me you will not be a pest there! Aling Clara told Paulino.
Promise po, Inay!

Origin of the Frog

They were then crossing a river to get to Kabesang Jaimes house. Aling Clara
could see how Paulino tried to carry most of the weight of the basket, and she was
very happy.
Aling Clara kept Paulino sitting in the basket now emptied of the camotes while
she did the cooking. She cooked many dishes of chicken, pork, and beef. When she
became very busy arranging the table laden with food, Paulino began filling
himself.
It was dusk when Aling Clara started for home, she didnt wait for the visitors
to arrive. She carried her things with Paulino in the basket because he could not
walk. He was so full, very heavy and could not carry himself.
Poor Aling Clara! She was so tired and could not hardly take a step. Things
became harder for her when they began crossing the river to get home. She felt
that the basket was beginning to break and.

Origin of the Frog

It did! Paulino fell into the water.
Paulino, my son! Aling Clara called when she could not see Paulino.
She called again. But there was no Paulino. Aling Clara began to cry. My son! she
sobbed.
Croakcroak!
Aling Clara looked at the placed where the sound came from. She saw a very strange
animal. She had not seen anything like it before. It had a very big bulging stomach, but
the legs were very short and thin. The eyes looked at her pitifully.
Croak.croak! It said.
Paulino?
Croakcroak!
Aling Clara cried. Oh Paulinomy son! I told you we told you not to eat too
much
Thi is indeed, the story of Paulino who did nothing but eat, and he became a frog!

A question mark is placed at the end of a sentence

goes up at the end of the sentence.

Questions that begin withwho,what,when,where,why,which, andhow(often
referred to as wh-questions) usually end in

falling intonation.

Examples:

When is he coming?

Also, commands and statements end in falling intonation. Commands and statements end in a period.
Examples:

Commands
Shut the door.
Write your name.
Statements

It is raining.

Rising Intonation
Questions that can be answered with a yes or no answer (often referred to as yes/no questions)
usually end inrising

intonation. The voice tone goes up at the end of the sentence.

Examples:

Is it five oclock yet?

Is that Mrs. Smith?
Is he coming?

In addition, wh-questions that ask for clarification or restating end in rising

intonation.
