It has been intimated by the client that samples are obtained from dump kept at site in size for utilization on roads as
such design has to be worked out within frame works of this keeping this aspect in view, all samples are sieved out and
ascertained that requirement of 20 mm thick Open Graded Premix Surfacing would be met by the sample no 1, sample
no 2 with 80/100 Grade Bitumen.

If appears that material natural occurring after discarding (+) 26.5 mm size, is within the limit required for
mechanical stability but it does not contain sufficient clay to act as binder so as to obtain good compaction and
also meet up deficiency in inter-locking in respect of uncrushed gravel, Moreover higher liquid limit and plasticity
indices are desirable in the surfacing in order to provide greater cohesion and to help offset the moisture by
evaporation unless it is intended ultimately receive some other more permanent surfacing.
Considering all pros & cons of the matter it is proposed to proportion 80 P.C. of gravel material (S1) 20, 15 P.C., Clay (S-3). 85 P.C. of S-4 clay in order to obtain mechanically stable product.
The fraction passing the No. 425 mic sieve shall have the following characteristics.

Introduction
The following three numbers of samples i.e. Sample 1 Coarse Aggregate, Sample 2 Dust & Sample 3 Hydrated
Lime are forwarded by the client to our Laboratory for designing the 12.0 mm thick Mastic Aspalt to be utilized in
Bhangagarh Fly Over. The M/S B.C.T. has subjected all these samples to various test and it was realized that dust &
lime need to be replaced and coarse aggregate is to be sieve out in 2.36 mm sieve and (-1) 2.36 mm aggregate is to
be discarded. However the client has replaced the dust and lime latter.
A) The Gradation of Coarse aggregate after discarded the (-) 2.36 mm sieve is thus

Lime had been sieve out by 2.36 mm sieve & (+) 2.36 mm has been discarded. It may be pointed out that lime supplied
by BHUTAN does not serve the purpose as such lime from MEGHALAYA has been utilized in the Mix. The client again
had supplied one lime sample.

Now 17% Bitumen (85/25 Grade industrial Bitumen) has been taken of wt. mix consisting of fine aggregates & filler.
The resulting proportion of each i.e. Dust 54%, Lime 29%, Bitumen 17%.
In was concluded that adding of 35% of coarse aggregate of total mix, the mix would suffix the purpose.
The final proportion will be coarse aggregate 35%, Dust 35%, Lime 19% & Bitumen 11%
JOB MIX FORMULA FOR 16 PC BINDER
i) Fine Aggregate
= 65 PC
ii) Filler
= 35 PC
Binder
= 16 Pc of mix wt.
F.A. & Filler
= 84 PC
F.A.
= 54.6 PC
Filler
= 29.4 PC
Proportion of total Mix C.A.- 35 PC of total Mix therefore 65 PC would be binder
Binder 16x.65 = 10.4 PC
F.A. 54.6X.65 = 35.49 PC
Filler 29.4x6.5 = 19.11 PC
Therefore proportion became
C.A -35 PC
F.A -35.5 PC
Filler 19.1 PC
Binder 10.4 PC
A test track utilizing various type of mixes suggested in this report is to be laid the one which suits, should be adopted to.
THE HARDNESS NUMBER OF FINAL MIX IS ASCERTAIN TO BE 14 AT 250 C
