 This graph shows that in the year 2000, 65% of
jobs were professional occupations. Let’s
pretend that has not changed.
 In January 2010, 138,333,000 people were
employed in the United States (BLS).

1. InJanuary 2010, at least how many people


worked in professional occupations?
2. Why do you think there are more professional
occupations now than in 1950?
1. At least 89,916,450 people in the U.S. in
professional occupations
2. Technology & automation do a lot of jobs
that used to be “manual labor”: ATMs,
factories, shipping…even math analysis!
National Assessment of Adult
Literacy in 2004 asked questions
about reading, math, and completing
forms to adults across the U.S.
 This graph shows the average skill level of
adults by their degree.
1. What is the skill difference between the
average person who did not complete high
school & a person with a GED?
2. What is the skill difference between the
average person with a high school diploma
& a four-year degree?
3. How much studying do you think the
average person needs to pass the GED?
1. 260 – 207 = 53 points
2. 314 – 262 = 52 points
3. 4 years?! It usually does not take that
long, usually closer to 9-12 months of
studying and come to class every week.
BUT it does takes commitment &
perseverance.

numbers for January 2010:
 How can educational attainment impact a
person’s employment and income?

 In your essay, give reasons why you think


education level impacts employment and
income. Use your personal observations,
experience and knowledge to support your
essay.

 You have 45 minutes…just kidding!


 The more education you have, the more you
develop your skills. If you have more skills,
you are likely to earn more money and it is
easier to find and keep a job.

 Note: even the highest levels of education


have almost 5% unemployment right now!
