Executive Summary <Un-attended drive test: UADT>

Need

For over a decade NPO drive testing has been

dependent on the services & skill sets of a technician
- large subco spend for Nokia
This has meant far too much time on the field
manually collecting raw data & processing it for
optimization purposes
Increasing network complexity has led to NPO
projects demand for expediting post processing and
lower cost of drive test
Our end customers constantly demand quality
Approach
reporting and faster analysis of radio network
issues

What was the problem?

Drive testing methodology has had
zero innovation in the last decade
albeit it is a major cost
component (~30%) for Nokia in
the NPO projects

Drive test team = car + driver + technician

No central storage of raw data; raw data history rarely archived
DT raw data is manually processed in technicians PC for reporting
Processed reports are then analyzed by local Nokia teams

Drive test team = car + driver + automated tool

Drive test teams centrally controlled by a Fleet
Manager
DT raw data uploaded into central server while DT is
ongoing
Data archived in server & auto pulled by GDC for
reporting

For internal use

Local team receives reports from GDC for subsequent

analysis

Approach: key solution components

Automated drive test tool developed by ASCOM with inputs from Nokia

Phones & control unit inside a rugged suitcase suited for MEA terrain
Supports TD LTE drive test using commercial TD LTE phones
Phones can also be used for indoor tests by unplugging from the control unit
No antenna modifications needed in the phones, phones simulate customer experience
Separate space in the box for scanner and battery backup

Remote upload of drive routes to in-car GPS & real time car tracking

Garmin GPS connected to a Lenovo windows tablet having mobile broadband connectivity & GPS
Tablet provides remote connectivity via TEAM viewer SW freely available on the internet
Drive routes created remotely using Google earth on the fleet managers PC
Drive routes downloaded to GPS using free Garmin base camp SW pre loaded on the tablet
Windows based followmee app on tablet allowing to track drivers location in real time

Command control for DT scripting & backend server

6
For internal use

Backend server loaded with ASCOMs automated backend server software

All drive test scripts like 3G short call, LTE data tests, 2G long calls etc. created on this console
Scripts fed remotely to the automated drive test tool for configuration and running tests
All log files captured in the field transferred automatically to this server even when DT is running

Approach: business case model Saudi STC specific

Use of mixed manual & automated drive tests for pragmatic uptake of
innovation

Entire DT cost from subco treated as opex for the project
Procurement driven auction process used for minimizing opex on top of savings from automating
the process
Manual DT -> Car + driver + technician; Automated DT -> car + driver
Split between manual and automated DT decided based on type of drive tests conducted in the project
