What is parallelism?
Parallel construction 1
An article or preposition applying to
all members of a series must either be
used only before the first term or else
be repeated before each term.
Incorrect: One can visit Tokyo in
spring, summer or in winter.
Correct: One can visit Tokyo in spring,
in summer or in winter./ One can visit
Tokyo in spring, summer or winter.
Parallel construction 2
Correlative expression (both, and;
not, but; not only, but also; either, or
etc) should be followed by same
grammatical construction.
Incorrect: It was both a long
ceremony and tedious.
Correct: The ceremony was both long
and tedious.
Parallel construction 3
When making comparisons, the things
you compare should be couched with
parallel structures whenever that is
possible and appropriate.
Incorrect: Our model is more
predictable than Scott.
Correct: Our model is more predictable
than Scotts.
Parallel construction 4
Use the ing form(gerund) of words
in a sentence to make your idea
understandable.
Incorrect: Mary likes hiking,
swimming, and to bicycle.
Correct: Mary likes hiking, swimming,
and bicycling.
Parallel construction 5
With compound subjects, the
individual subjects should have the
same form.
Incorrect: Augite in large phenocrysts
and small grain of Olivine are common
in the lava.
Correct: Large augite in phenocrysts
and small grain of Olivine are common
in the lava.
Parallel construction 6
Use of infinitive phrases:
Incorrect: Mary likes to hike, to swim,
and bicycling.
Correct: Mary likes to hike, to
swim, and to bicycle.
Parallel construction 7
