This document provides an overview of several theories of motivation: Taylor's scientific management theory that pay is the main motivator; Maslow's hierarchy of needs; McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y about management assumptions; Herzberg's two-factor theory distinguishing hygiene and motivator factors; and Mayo's human relations theory. The aim is for managers to understand different motivation theories to help motivate employees.

TAYLOR
SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT OR ECONOMIC MAN
APPROACH
Taylor put forward the idea that workers are
motivated mainly by pay. His Theory of Scientific Management argued the following: Workers do not naturally enjoy work and so need close supervision and control. Therefore managers should break down production into a series of small tasks.

MCGREGOR
THEORY X AND THEORY Y
Theory X and Theory Y. 'Theory X' and 'Theory Y' are
theories of human motivation created and developed by Douglas McGregor at the MIT Sloan School of Management in the 1960s.
