It is extremely important for
basketball

continuously run for a few
minutes

• A practice should consist

of several drills that:
– Are primarily for quick
movements
– Involve running for stamina
• Players should know
when to take breaks:
– Foul shots, time outs, never

Health
and
Nutrition

The athletes
should be told of

drink
• Especially before
practicing or
playing
– Proper hydration
Offensive
Principles

running a play

– Adjusting the Plan
• Off the Court Issues
• Winning or Losing a
Basketball Game
Putting Together a Practice Plan
• All practices should include:
– General and position specific drills
– Offensive and Defensive Principles
• Including teaching and reviewing plays
– Conditioning
• They should begin with stretching and
warm-up drills to prevent injuries
• Water breaks should be given regularly,
especially after conditioning drills
Preparing for a
Game
• A coach (when possible) should
acquire game tapes or watch the
opposing team
– To acquire plays
– To see how they handle various
situations
– Who is good and how to stop them
• With this information coaches in
the preceding practices should:
– Show the players what the
opponents will do
– How to stop them, and how to beat
them
Game • Pre-Game, Quarters, Half-time breaks should be used to inform
players of the other team

Strategy: – Which hand (left or right) certain players use

– What plays they run and what plays are working

Time • Time-outs should be used to:

– Adjust the strategy to stop a consistent weakness

Manageme –

To stop an opponents momentum/ scoring run
Give players a break or bring in substitutions

nt – To stop the clock and set up last second plays

Game Strategy:
• A game plan should be
Adjusting the Game adjusted to:
Plan – Take advantage of a
weakness
– Stop the exploitation of a
weakness
– To force a change in an
opponents strategy
• Time-outs can be used to
adjust a game plan
• Switching a defense can
confuse an offense or force a
quick shot (when the quarter
is ending)
• If the opponents adjust their
plays, adjusting one’s own can
cause a weakness in theirs
Off-the-
Court
Issues
After a Game
• After a win a coach should
make sure the players act
with sportsmanship
• A coach should note what
did and did not work to
improve for the next game
– This should be reflect in the
following practices
• After a loss a coach should
evaluate the causes
– Were the plays ineffective?
– Was there a skill or
fundamental that was lacking?
• Using these a coach should
develop the team to avoid a
loss from similar problems
Class Activities
• Show dribbling drills to the class and
have them participate.
• Have passing drills for the class to
do.
