Oymyakon

The coldest town on earth

Najhladniji grad na svetu.

If you get up in the morning and you see that the temperature
outside is -71C, for sure you live in Oymyakon.
(Although we should clarify, that this extreme temperature was
reached only once; in 1926.)
sigurno ste u Ojmjakonu. (Mada treba rei da je ta temperatura
dostignuta samo jednom, 1926.godine.)

Spomenik najnioj temperaturi na svetu u naseljenom mestu.

The town is located in the Russian republic of Yakutia in Siberia, on a

plateau 750 meters above sea level. The winter last for 9 months here.
The climate is extreme because the mountain ranges surrounding it
prevents the heavy cold air masses that cover the valley to escape.

Its population of 2200

inhabitants lives far from the
amenities that usually cities
provide.

Oymyakon is a s frozen landscape, immersed in a snow for nine months.

Zaleeni pejzai Ojmjakona pokriveni snegom tokom 9 meseci.

During fishing, the fish is already covered with ice as it

leaves the water. Thirty seconds is enough for it to be
frozen hard as a rock.
Another curiosity of this place is; in a supermarket no
one can buy a carton of milk, there is no milk in liquid
form, but only frozen like a marble block.

kocka mermera.

Freezing is free. Within 30 seconds of leaving the water, the fish

are hard as rocks.

Besplatno zamrzavanje riba je smrznuta nakon 30 sekundi.

In this picture, we can imagine what it's like a walk down town.

Interestingly, the name Oymyakon means water that never freezes.

The government decided to build the city here because of the
presence of hot water springs. In addition, Oymyakon is in a valley
surrounded by high mountains that stop the wind. This makes it more
bearable, the extreme temperatures in winter, but during the brief
summer period, the temperature can reach +35 C.
(Can you imagine the great differences in temperature?)

niske temperature lake podnose, dok za vreme kratkog leta temperature zato
mogu dostii i +35C.
(Da li moete da zamislite ovakve temperaturne razlike?)

In the early twentieth century it was a place of reindeer

herding. Later in its heyday, the Soviet regime created a city
equipped with all necessities. It created an important
development as the mountains of the region are extremely rich
in gold, silver, platinum and other metals. However, most
residents of Oymyakon are barely above the poverty line.

potrebno.
regionu veoma bogate rudama zlata, srebra, platine i dugih
metala. No, i pored toga, itelji Ojmjakona ive na ivici siromatva.

Now the city survives on local

resources (as before),
especially livestock, hunting
and fishing, and also of tourism
which is a destination for many
adventurers and eccentrics.

Danas grad preivljava (kao i pre)

samo na svojim resursima
gajenje stoke, ribolov, lov, a takoe
i od turizma, jer ga poseuju mnogi
avanturisti i ekscentrici.

turistima koji ih posete tokom godine.

To reach Oymyakon one must take the Kolyma highway,

a road built by Stalins order, by convicts and political
prisoners. Many thousands of them died during the
tough construction and they were later buried under the
pavement, that is why the Kolyma highway is known as
the "road of bones."

As you can see in the image before, in winter snow

on the roads is so thick that many trucks end up
literally buried under the snow, and in summer the
route turns into a quagmire in which it is very often
bogged down.

The vehicles arriving at

Oymyakon are equipped
with double glass to keep
out cold air from the cabin,
and the engine must
remain running for as long
as its fuel last, otherwise
it almost instantly freezes.

opremljena su duplim staklima
da bi se kabine sauvale od

The animals of the area have adapted to the rigors of time.

Oymyakon horses are very robust, short-legged and with
thick fur. They have been used in many polar expeditions.
They are semi-wild horses and rarely accept to be mounted.
They are used as beasts of burden and their meat is highly
valued by the villagers who eat very few vegetables, because
most fruits and vegetables are ruined at such low
temperatures.
surove uslove. Ojmjakonski konji su robusni, kratkih nogu i
debelog krzna.
stanovnitva, koji jedu veoma malo povra, jer voe i povre
uglavnom propadne na tako niskim temperaturama.
