Science

• Science :- it is a body of systematized

knowledge, based on logical consistency,
systematic explanation, critical evaluation &
experimental analysis.

According to Frederick Winslow Taylor “ the best

management is true science, resting upon clearly
defined laws .
Management as a Science

• Science consist of 3 characteristics:-

• It is systematic & organized knowledge based on
scientific method of observation.
• Inferences are arrived after continuous observation
& experiments.
• Principles are universally accepted without any
limitation.
• MANAGEMENT CANNOT BE CALLED AS
COMPLETE SCIENCE.
Companies with science approach

• Failed:-
 IBM
 KODAK
 WESTINGHOUSE
 AMERICAN EXPRESS
 SEARS
 GENERAL MOTORS
Management as an art

• Art is related with the bringing of a desired

result through application of skills.
• Art uses the known rules & principles and uses the
skills,Expertise,Wisdom,Experience, to achieve the
desired result .
• The point is how to get the things done in the desired
manner to get the desired result.
• New methods can be adopted from the past
experience & incidents what to do & what not to do.
• So it is definitely an art & can be acquired only by
practicing the theoretical knowledge skillfully &
prudently.
CONCLUSION

•Management has got two faces like a coin, on one side it is art
& on other it is science. Management has got scientific
principles which constitute the element of science & skills &
talent which are the attribute of arts.
•Management skills are acquired by constant practice as in the
case of medicine , engineering & accountancy; mere knowledge
of concepts will not fetch results, understanding human
behavior, tactfulness, vision, pragmatism, creativity, compassion
towards staff, team spirit are all needed by successful manager
for effective management.
•The science & art are not mutually exclusive but
complementary to each other. Therefore management is both
art and science.
